throw a CZ in the mix, and this will be just about every other "what 9mm thread"
Ill skip all the BS. You need to shoot them all, and see what is comfortable. Im a fan of XDs and CZ, the M&P I loved the ergos and hated the trigger

Put me in for glocks vote.
Also consider the 19. Sub compact version of the 17.
Glock is a great first gun to start out with due to the simplicity and how they don't need to be babied and still stay reliable. But you really can't go wrong with any of those listedComment

G26 or M&P 9 compact.
Also, no pic..Comment

Completely different types of guns and completely different feels and styles of shooting with each.
If you want something in between, then obvioulsy a compact size would be your best bet. But saying you want a full-size G17 or a sub compact (which would be equivalent to a G26), they are 2 completely different handguns to shoot.
IMO, you're best off deciding what size frame you want.... but then you kind of already made up your mind on a full size frame with your choices above.Comment

I'd go with either a Glock 19 or S&W M&P. I personally like M&P's more but for the fact that the Glock trigger is much better. I wish my M&P had the same trigger as my Glock.
If you're able to SSE, the HK P30 is my favorite 9mm out of them all and the FNX 9mm is pretty good as well.Comment

I would consider a Glock 17 or M&P9.
But if for some reason you don't like or want them, then XD9 and lastly, SR9.In Glock We Trust.

You've narrowed it down to 4 solid pistols. I can give you my choice (CZ75) but you'll need to rent or borrow them. After shooting all four you will know which one is the best for you.
Out of your list of four. I prefer the XD. The grip angle is a more natural fit for me. The Glock just feels wrong, M&P doesn't feel substantial enough (barely makes sense to me), and the Ruger is nice but not refined enough. With that being said I would be comfortable with any of them.

Of the ones that you mention I would go with the Ruger. I actually tend to prefer the SR9c to the SR9 but both are very nice firearms.
My fav 9mm is the Beretta M9A1 or 92FS but if that does not strike your fancy for one reason or another I would go with the Ruger. The M&P is nice but the Ruger has a better trigger than either the M&P or (especially) the Glock.Come and Take It!
