To each their own. Most 5.7 owners I know love it despite the caveats you mentioned. The ammo price is on par with .45 so not overly expensive like some people claim but don't expect to find special deals.

I sold mine a year ago and don't miss it at all. The FNH5-7 was built around the SS190 black tip cartridge. The armor penetrating cartridge is not available to civilians. Because of this, I'll pass.

Buy yourself a nice 1911 instead.

Nope, not crazy at all. Great looking pistol, but the oddball ammo has kept me at bay.

Get it and then report back on how awesome it is.

                  Not crazy.

If its your first or only handgun, then yeah, crazy, but if you already have something useful and want something exotic or different, it's a good, affordable choice.

NO way man! It's on Sons of Anarchy now, that must mean it's legit (just like the Sig 551's they have now). Nothing punctures a Russian like the 5.7 /sarcasm

Also, zfields - don't drag the iPhone into this, that guys clearly a douche all by himself.

Now for the serious response: Yeah, sort of. You have all the drawbacks of a small round with the biggest plus of the 57 taken away - the black tips and regular capacity (at least in CA). I considered getting a PS90 and if I did I would say it might have made a little more sense, but CA makes those semi useless as well (10 rounders again) along with the fauxpressor you have to put on the PS90 to make the OAL requirement. Even if you go the route of an AR57 instead (cheaper by a long shot than the PS90 and uses the same lo-cap magazines) its still sort of a conversation piece more than a serious pistol. I'm not sure what else you have but if you are looking for a first or only pistol, maybe look at a better "standard" platform 1911, CZ75, XD (they've got a good deal on the 9 or 40 at Turners right now - see another post on the front page of this forum), one of the other FN pistols in a standard caliber or a Glock before going with the 57. +1 to that, there are several seasoned gun-owners here that recommend not to get a Five Seven if it's your first handgun. I would personally say, for a first handgun, get a 9mm or .40, and then get something exotic like the 5.7 if you desire.

The ammo is everywhere really. Online as well as in gun stores.

Neat weapon if you want something different.

Don't purchase this handgun if you are new to firearms?

                          Lets see,
                          -Light recoil so more control
-Full sized frame, easy to grip and get your body on the frame
-Single action in a polymer frame
                          -Very lightweight fully loaded
                          Ammo considerations..Elite Ammo

I own one, and it has been my primary carry since it first was allowed in CA. I also have the other usual handguns, but prefer my 5.7 due to exceptional light weight in a full sized handgun, light recoil very controllable cartridge.
It could easily be someones first handgun.
This gun and many others are what makes firearm ownership so easy to be distracted and or excited about GUNS!
                          Its variety.
They all basically operate the same, and thankfully not all look the same.

This firearm guy says get it, and get two. Because one is none, and two is one....hehe
