    Grandpa's WWII M 1911 A1

Took a little road trip to visit my grandfather for Labor Day weekend, and pulled out his 1911 that was issued to him in WWII. Mainly, I wanted to make sure it was staying in good condition and I wanted to check out the serial number and the manufacturer.

Turns out it was made by Union Switch & Signal in 1943. Slide and frame are both US&S -- and they only made 55,000 total 1911's, all in '43! I know the frame is also US&S because of the inspector stamp behind the trigger on the left side, and because the finger reliefs on the frame, behind and on either side of the trigger, are elliptical instead of symmetrical half-moon shapes.

Inside of the chamber and barrel look absolutely brand new, no joke. There is a bit of pitting on the top of the chamber (on the outside, where it's visible through the ejection port), and a very small amount of surface rust on the slide. I think the firing pin spring is weak, but the others feel great and I have no doubt it would function fine. I put some new grease on it to prevent further rust.

Sorry for the crappy photos. I checked it out at night and only brought an old point-and-shoot. I wasn't planning on sharing; just taking photos so I could do some research when I got home. Last two digits of serial number blacked out.

I took his 1945 Lee Enfield a couple years ago. GREAT shooter. The thing is crazy, crazy accurate. Since the wood stocks didn't match (the butt stock was replaced. Stamp in forend matches the metal parts) I went ahead and put a plastic monte carlo stock and a scope on it. Love the thing.

He also has an Arisaka that he took back from Japan but, unfortunately, it rusted like crazy. He lost it in a box during a move and it got basically destroyed. Bolt works fine and didn't rust much at all, for whatever reason (stainless?), but the receiver and barrel are nasty and I think most of the action is also. I'm 90% sure it's ruined. I'll probably take it next time I visit though and try to clean it up as best as possible and, worst case, it'll look cool on the wall or whatever.

Thanks for sharing, I'd love a US&S 1911, out of the producers of wartime pistols I hold their model with high esteem, they usually seem to be the best made from that time period...

BTW, if you or your family ever sells it, I will make sure someone comes to your house and beats you with a blunt object LOL

Very awesome and rare WWII 1911.
Hopefully he understands your interest in it and wants you to have it someday. It is in great shape too.

Clean it up and check it out man. The Arisaka is known for having one of the strongest actions of all the milsurp WWII rifles.
The barrel might be toast, but it still might be safe to shoot. Just clean it up really well and have a smith look at it and see what he has to say.
