If that's the case, then it's the store policy. There is no mandate from the state that a buyer only has 3 chances to do the demonstration that I've ever read or heard of in a shop.

I was told by a gun shop employee that that's actually one of the things they look for when doing the test. Kinda like in a sobriety test, where they're "testing" one thing and actually looking for something else. Keep your finger off the trigger, and be sure not to point the gun at anyone (especially the guy administering the test!).

I dont think any store clerk has ever not given someone their gun becuase they failed the safety demonstration. If you fail, they tell you what you did wrong and you do it again

I was told by the staff once that the only way to fail is to actually shoot the person behind the counter. He admitted that it was probably impossible since a snapcap is used for the demonstration.

And yes, I am fully aware he was joking.

Could be it -- must be a store policy.

They always told me that anybody behind the counter doesn't exist -- just myself and other customers. That just means I can't point the barrel at myself or anybody behind me. Sideways was ok.

it's been 50/50 for me. the last time I had to do it, the whole process took less than a minute. if you're new, they usually walk you through the entire process anyways. just keep your finger away from the trigger and don't point the pistol at anybody.
