handgun safety demonstration

Are you allowed to 'practice', like for a couple of run through, before the demonstration or is it pretty much here it is and lets go.

I'm getting a glock 19, my first gun ever, and it seems pretty straightforward on youtube.

They will instruct you as in take out the magazine, make sure its clear and unloaded, etc etc. Pretty much a once run through, from my experience.

The best thing you can do is take a basic safety class at a range before picking up your gun. They will teach you everything you will be "tested" on and a whole lot more. Once you've done that, you won't worry a bit about the safety demonstration.

Of course, if you have any manual dexterity and two brain cells to rub together, you'll be able to pass the safety demo anyway, but I think my advice above is sound.

I think I only do the safe handgun demo 1 out of 10 purchases. Though what I buy is much different than first time owners.
I always enjoyed rolling the sigle actions across my arms when checking to make sure the gun is empty. They always get a kick out of that.

Coincidentally, that happened to me yesterday at Turners. They were showing a shotgun to an older gentleman, and as I glanced to my left, I found myself looking down the barrel. Not cool.

To be fair, they did see me remove the mag and clear the gun when I picked it up, so they may have counted that as part of the "test".

I had to do one once at a range... in Virginia.

Same here. I've done lots of PPT's and purchases, and only 1 time have I actually had to do the handgun safety demonstration. And even then, the store clerk did it first to show exactly what to do on each part (not that I didn't know what to do already).

You'll do fine. It is see spot run stuff. But if you are at all concerned about you safety and skill set take a Defensive Handgun or Tactical Pistol I course. Local schools advertise in the Compeition, Action Shooting and Training Section here on Calguns. Here in Sacramento Gray Ops 1* http://gofast1.com/ is an affordable and very fun option. Courses run $160 for a full 8 hour course. You provide your own gun, ammo, holster, magazines, mag pouch etc. You will leave considerably more confident and proficient than you are now and with a HUGE smile on your face. If you are no where near Sacramento, don't fret. Look in that section I mention above and you'll find a school near you.

Mr. Jim Bowen runs AKI here in SoCal.. and he's an FFL too

He doesn't do regular classes anymore, only instructor classes. I've done two instructor classes with him and have a third scheduled for October.

A lot of shops work that way. If you can demonstrate safe handling of the firearm while you're checking it out, they don't need to make you take some separate test if they have any sense. There is of course the exception to the rule... Targetmasters, where a PPT just might take you 90 minutes thanks to their paperwork and silly procedures.

If they already saw you drop the mag, check that the chamber was clear, kept your finger off the trigger except for dry firing it(or any other reason your finger should be on the trigger, like checking out the feel, creep, surface finish, etc.) and didn't wave it around sweeping everyone in the room with the muzzle, then you've just demonstrated your knowledge of basic firearm safety to them. There's just no need to do it again(although if they think that you're inexperienced then they just might, not necessarily because they have to, but to help pound it into your head).

For TLE, like other people have mentioned, go take a basic safety course at a local range if you don't have anyone that can help you out. While there are some youtube videos that can demonstrate things, there are also some that are very... incorrect to say the least. Plus, with a live instructor you can ask questions about things you might not be certain about or that could be specific to the gun you're buying if it's not similar enough to the one that the demonstration is done with.
