Colt 1991A1 Commander

how do they shoot?

I carry a combat commander everyday, they shoot just like a gun should, recoil is negligible

are they reliable/durable

yup, I have no idea how old mine is (haven't checked, don't really care though), but I would guess mine has had 7k+ rounds through it, and it's yet to FTF or FTE with quality mags (it's not a fan of pro mags, and neither am I), when I got it the extractor was starting to clock, but a new extractor and FPS and no more clocking. I also stuck a 10-8 flat trigger in it as they're my preferred trigger, took just a touch of file work on the over travel post, and some sanding on the shoe and I cleaned up the sear/hammer/disco and now it breaks clean at around 4.5lbs with no creep...FWIW I just put a flat trigger in my RIA tactical a couple days ago and it took no fitting whatsoever (I was shocked). The only routine maintenance it really gets is wiped down with an oily rag every few days before it goes to nightstand duty (a blued finish seems to attract holster wear and lint). It usually spends around 10-12hours a day in a holster.

Here is mine. Mine is from the mid 90s. Triggers was heavy and extractor needed tuning. After the extractor was tuned and ramp/throat polished I haven't had any problems with factory rounds of any type. As you can see it has a little bit of modifications done to it. It's not a close tolerance 1911 like a Kimber, but it's very reliable and I can get 4" groups at 25 yards. Not exactly match grade, but for defensive role it will do the job.

I'll try to get some pics of it if I can, I'd really like to get it, but cant buy it outright, thats why i'm offering a glock 27 in trade for a 26, cuz he wants a 26, and he'll trade me on it.

That is like comparing apples to oranges. They are completely different guns.
Glock is DAO(pre-set), striker-fired
Colt is SAO, hammer fired.

All in all:
The 1911 will feel better in the hand. (usually, for most shooters)

They will be about equal, accuracy wise.

The 1911 will be slimmer than the glock. (slimmer = more concealable)

The 1911 will "kick" much less, (less felt recoil) Obviously, it weighs more.

The 1911 will weigh more than the glock, which is bad for a CC gun.

The 1911 is larger length wise, I believe.




They are completely different. I would go for the Colt. But that is me. Also, the Colt is more expensive than the glock.

Also the 1991a1 commander you want is not on the DOJ list. If you can get one through a trade with someone. I would jump on it.

She will love the 1991a1. and I would be willing to bet that she loves it better than the glock. The 1911 is just about the most perfect feeling handgun ever. IMO and the opinion of a lot of other people as well.

I think the 1991a1 commander would be a great gun for a young woman. I know my GF absolutely loves my 1911's including my 1967 LW Commander. It is quite funny sometimes.

Nah, I don't. Check google images. The 1911 is slimmer, noticeably slimmer, than the glock.

we went to the range yesterday (another thread), and after shooting each of my glocks, she went back to the 30, and never touched the others again, she really likes it.
afterwards, she spoke about not being able to own a gun til she's 21, but i corrected her on that one, she perked up (shes 20), with a birth year 91, very fitting to gift her a 1991 i think. i just want to make sure its something she 'will' like and be comfy with. I bought her a FS membership, and have spares in case her significant other wants one. just want her to have what she likes and is comfortable with, and of course can shoot well.

oh, shes a lefty, and does not like the extraction of the glock, is the port a bit further forward maybe on the 1991, seems to eject to her thumbs, and i'm not sure how to advise with that.

Ya, that would be cool to get her a Colt 1991 because she was born in 91. Very suitable. Maybe look at getting her a full sized Colt 1991 as an alternative? The 1911/commander is a bigger handgun than the glock 30, so, I doubt the extraction would be a problem. My GF is also a lefty and she has no problem shooting any of my 1911's.
