    The reason why this happens is because this is not an inertial firing pin with a return spring. Instead, the striker is reset by its engagement with the trigger bar as the slide travels forward during the firing cycle.

                          That gun was not duracoated.
                          To the op, the correct procedure to verify the safety is working correctly is feild strip your gun. Then pull the striker to the rear of the slide and let it snap forward under spring tension. It should not protrude at all. Then press the plunger just under the extractor and push the striker forward. You should now see the tip of the striker. Now repeat, if the tip is seen when the plunger has not been depressed your gun is defective.
