The current standard issue firearm for CHP officers is the Smith & Wesson Model 4006 TSW in .40 S&W.

That is correct and usually equipped with the Streamlight TRL1 and in a Safariland holster.

Correct. CHP may arguably be S&W largest customer still on 3rd generation guns.

I carried this & its predecessor for 15 years.

Never was thrilled about the caliber, or the pistol's weight.

However, given the "must be" parameters of:

              1) DA/SA trigger,
              2) .40 caliber,
              3) and every day/all weather duty carry...

I'd have chosen this pistol over any other - and I'm a Glock, .45 caliber, and 1911 fanboy (in that order).

Ya, I sort of question why they would go with s&w over sig's cheaper bid...

A purely cynical guess with not factual evidence at all would be that someone got a kick back.

They carry a piece of garbage. The whole rotten deal sure comes off like someone up high got a kickback, or just has the world's biggest woody for SW Gen 3 POS pistols.

The word was that the purchasing agent in the CHP was tight with someone at S&W.

AND the government style mind set of- "We've always done it this way and not gonna change."

Trust me, most of the field personnel wanted to get the SIGs over the S&Ws.

And they have had problems with the S&Ws after the purchase.

My old neighbor was a CHP officer and that is exactly what he carried.

Never understand why officer who bet his/her life on the line of duty can't choose his/her own weapon for defending his/her own life.

The mind set is that Officers can swap magazines if needed in a fire fight.

Also- Keeping the department issued firearms the same really keeps cost down in maintenance, equipment, training, gun smithing, etc.

Another reason S&W was chosen is a manual safety and the Magazine Disconnect feature. Sigs don't have it. I have not found any documented accounts of the round in chamber being used to save a life, however there are volumes of documented accounts of magazine safeties saving an officers backside during disarmings.
I don't care for them, personally, but I do see the pro aurgument for them on police pistols.
