Yet another roster question

My brother (in another state) has a Sig 226 with a threaded barrel. It's their Tactical Operations model. Oddly enough I can't find a tac ops with a threaded barrel on the Sig web site, just this one which comes with 20-rd magazines (his came with 15-rd magazines). The box says 226-9-TAC and SIGARMS, 226R-9,B,SLITE.

He's interested in selling in to me and I'm interested in buying it. The threaded barrel makes it a CA "assault weapon" but the barrel could be easily replaced with a non-threaded version before shipping to my California FFL.

I have 10-round 226 magazines and of course he wouldn't ship it with any of the normal capacity 15-rd magazines.


My question is whether or not replacing the barrel is enough. There are a lot of 4.4" barreled 9mm 226R models, blued & stainless, listed on the DOJ roster.

Its has to be in the roster so that the ffl can transfer it to. He can ship you the mags as long as they are disassembled.

Right, so is this a roster'd handgun? They specifically list the 226 Navy (for example), so I'm unsure if they need to specifically list the 226 tac ops. Minus the threaded barrel, it's just a 9mm 226R with a 4.4" barrel ...

Here is a list of all Sig 226's on the roster. If it does not match exactly to one of these it is not on the roster.

If your parents/grand parents live in CA he could gift it to one of them and then they could gift it to you.

If not he could convert it to SSE and that would work too.

It's just odd that they specifically list the P226 Navy

Negative.... it has to be specifically listed. The Navy is listed specifically because in California's eyes it's different than the standard 226


Why not just ship a 226 lower frame?

You cannot ship a frame into California. It has to be a complete gun according to my dealer. I have a Glock 23 upper and want to order a lower from glockmeister.com but my dealer said I would have to ship the upper to glockmeister.com and have them put it on the lower before they could ship it into this communistic state.

There are also ways around the roster for your situation. Are either or both of your parents alive? If so he can legally transfer the gun to them via interfamily transfer and they can transfer the gun to you. Neither they nor your brother need to be CA residents for that to work. Its a pain, but it gets you around the roster. PM me if you want details or you might get some good info if you post in the FFL section.

I just read your post saying that the interfamily transfer was a no go. Unfortunately so is calling the Tac Ops a standard model and shipping it in. If it wasn't built in that configuration it can't be modified, named a different model, and shipped in.

Well, that sucks.

My father gave me an LCP last year by the parent-child intrafamilial gift exeption, but he died earlier this year. I could have my brother give it to my mother in a 3rd state and she could give it to me ... except she lives in Hawaii and apparently they have to apply for a permit and pay fees every single time they acquire a handgun. That's a lot of hassle to impose upon her - I can't even convince to buy a gun for her own use.

I may just wait and buy it off him later.
