    Non-listed handguns and CA legality

So I was in a local gun shop a couple weeks back with a fellow Calgunner and got in a bit of an argument with the store owner about this and have been meaning to check in and see if I was right.

I was under the impression that if you moved into CA you could bring any non-CA approved handgun you wanted and then sell them PPT within California. The store owner kept insisting and getting mad, saying that people moving in from out of state weren't allowed to bring the nonapproved guns into California with them.

    I was right, wasn't I?

Yes, you are right; each one must be reported and there are forms in order to do so with instructions listed on the DOJ/BOF website; something like "new to CA?"/"moving to CA?" in the FAQ section.

If I move back, I will bring a crapload of STIs, Colt 70s, and prelock S&W revolvers.

Very likely the store in Santa Barbara that I'm thinking about. It is run by ignorant, arrogant and provincial old farts who cater to the "hunting rifle" crowd. If you even mention the word "OLL" you will get the phone slammed down on you. You have to go to LA to get decent service. They won't see a dime of my money and I'm sure he has lost quite a few customers due to his attitude and arrogance. If he is the guy I'm thinking about, he also has the distinction of calling the ATF/BoF on a fellow OLL friendly FFL in town and got him shut down for documentation violations.

That basically describes a local shop in my part of the woods... do they all go to the same school to learn how to act that way or what?

I got into an arguement about the provisions doing an out-of-state C&R handgun acqusition and needing to go through a dealer. I mentioned the exemptions a C&R and COE gets you, such as not needing a HSC, or being exempt from the 10 wait, and I get asked with a straight face "What's a COE?".

I decided to stop trying to teach a pig to sing and found another shop that was much more on the ball, and friendly... the down side is that it's a 35 mile drive.
