    Should I buy a S&W 659

I have a friend selling one.
Have done some research on the price.
    The price seems very fair
    Serial Number Range: TAR54_ _
Some duty scratches but internals look real good

Comes with adjustable rear sights, two not so good functioning Pro Mags per friend.
A SafariLand duty holster, 520 rounds of ammo. Most is WW white box and UMC.
Also has Pachmayr Signature Series full wrap around rubber grips.
Should I or should I not??
I will be shooting it next weekend to try it out.
Busy this weekend so it sits in my safe waiting the trials.
    Any help appreciated

I owned a S&W 459 for many years (the blued version). One of the most reliable (and underrated) 9mm's out there, IMO. A friend of mine had a 659 and I put about 100-120 rounds through it and it was also very reliable.

One drawback is the large grip size, due to the magazine capacity (14 rounds).

You didn't mention the price, but if the price was right, I would grab it.

Carried one as my duty gun for years until my department authorized 45s
I still have it, it has never malfunctioned and served me well. If the price is right, go for it.

Dont hesitate. The 659 are great guns. solid. reliable. Mines never had a malfunction. The ergonomics are pretty decent but the not quite as good as the current crop of guns. The guns is 20 years old design but still solid. I have 9mms in almost every make and the 659 is solid. If its a decent price you'll like it. Interestingly I can accurately rapid fire the 659 almost as well as any gun ive shot.

A fine weapon. I have thousands of rounds through mine and never once has it malfunctioned in any way. It's a workhorse 9mm.

If the price is right, you won't regret it.

Great gun, SN puts it around 1987........A good deal on the gun itself should be $350 to $400....with the ammo & other goodies, $450 to $475.....remember you're going spent another $30 each on factory 10rd mags. Good Luck.

I remember them as having extremely long double action trigger pulls and in single, the trigger is way back.. my liking

Buy the 659 then start looking for a Marlin 9mm Camp Carbine. The magazines for the 59 series Smith will fit in the Marlin but will stick out a little. I have a 469 and the magazines for the that pistol fit perfectly in my Camp Carbine.

I'll probably have the lone opposing opinion. And I'm not really saying don't buy it - it's a personal choice. I'm just conveying my experience. I had one at one point, sold it, bought a P226 and never looked back, never regretted the decision. For me, the P226 has been much better in every aspect. Also, I prefer DA/SA w/out a safety.

That being said, I had an earlier generation of the model (front sight was not moveable/changeable -- completely fixed in place). Perhaps newer generations are better.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
                            I appreciated everyone’s response.
I have been so busy at work and home projects and haven’t been able to thank everyone.
                            THANKS

I have several SIG’s a Beretta and a wheel gun.
Just thinking that this 659 would be a good choice for the ruff around pick-up truck pistol.
Already has some duty scars and seems to be built really well. Heck it is an older S&W got to be built well and I am not a polymer fan.

                            Thanks Again

I have an older 59 series smith. It is built like a tank. The trigger pull is long, but it is functional. Plus at 17 rounds plus 1, I can not complain. Mine is all stainless with adjustable sights.
