I've never owned a handgun, but shoot clays with my shotgun now and then. I've been wanting a revolver for some time for plinking and informal target shooting. A Ruger GP100 felt good, but the Ruger Security Six felt better to me.
Anyway..
I recently won an auction for a .357 revolver, a Ruger Security Six (circa 1977) . I'm in CA and the seller (a private party) is in AZ.
My FFL tells me the Security Six (father of Ruger's GP100 revolver) is not on the CA DOJ roster, and can't be transfered to me. He says that if it were in CA, then a private party transfer could be arranged.
Looking at the DOJ website, I noticed this:
"Effective January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice. Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement."
I understand that private party transfers are exempt, but is it true that such transfers are only exempt as long as they are taking place within the State of California? (i.e., no out of state Ruger Security Sixes can be transferred in).
Sorry if this sort of thing has been asked a million times. I live on 40 acres in the middle of a National Forest and figured that getting a revolver wouldn't be anymore difficult than getting a shotgun. My bad, or something. I'm still in CA.
Thanks.
