new gun purchase - paperwork question

For the proof-of-residency paperwork when buying a new handgun: Do the addresses on my Drivers License and my Utility bill have to match? (they're both California)

    thanks in advance

You need current addresses. Get a change of address card from the DMV.

Yes! You can also use your cars registration as long as it matches the address on your DL. 

So I can use my DL with old address and car registration with old address? (I plan on filling out paperwork related to the gun purchase with my new address)

You need two forms of ID that show your current address. Drivers license and car registration is what I used, but you can use a utility bill as well. but they must be the same and your current address. If it is not your current address you give them then you have falsified information on the form, which of course is a no-no.

Thanks for the info everyone! I just popped the DMV change of address form in the mailbox. Hopefully I'll get my change of address card within 2-3 years : )

For the record, the DMV won't issue you a new DL just because you change your address. It just updates the records in their system, IIRC.

This is correct. You have to apply for a new license, which may or may not have stipulations (depending on when your last vision test was, written test etc.)

Also, as far as I know, their online change of address on their website is broken and has been for some time.

You will need to go into the DMV, wait in line, and then wait for them to mail it to you.

Most dealers will not accept the written DMV change of address/temporary drivers license as valid proof of residency.

You will also need a utility bill with the same address.

OK so here's what I have:

                  -CA DL w/ old address
-change of address card from DMV with new address (on it's way)
                  -US passport w/ new address
                  -car registration w/ new address
                  -utility bill w/ new address

I guess I should now assume I don't have the right stuff?

Looks like the CA DL w/ CURRENT address is key!

Not all shops will take a stamped card. You may have to update your car registration.

If you have a Lan line phone bill you can use that. No to cell phone bills.

My car registration is my current address.

Only my CA DL has the old address and I just sent in a change of address form to the CA DMV.

I'm not sure if they actually send me a card w/ my new address that I can "paperclip" to my DL with old address.

Most members in this thread seem to feel that most gun shops will NOT accept a non-current DL, regardless of whether or not I have a change of address card from the DMV attached to it.

I plan on purchasing my new handgun at Turner's Redondo Beach.

The DL itself can't be expired, but if you go to a DMV office and ask for a change of address, you can also ask that they give you a temporary "change of address" card that should be stamped by the DMV. But again, not all shops will take it.

car registration works if your drivers license address is out of date.
