Cleaning new guns before range?

Like others, I always tear into a brand-new firearm to make sure I'm 100% familiar with it before I take it out and try to act like I know what I'm doing. Disassemble, clean, lube, reassemble, safety check. - This is why I built my own AR, rather than buying an assembled carbine. Works well for me, I learn what I need to know, and if something happens that causes any failure - I'm better prepared to cope with it.

Read the instruction manual first. It can offer advice on yes clean/lube or no don't. I always atleast run a clean/dry patch down the bore to remove excess oil or obstructions. As stated above Glocks come with a break-in compound already applied but I still swab the bore. Henderson Defense Industries used to ship their Rommy G builds with a break-in compound and had a tag on trigge guard admonishing people from cleaning until atleast 200rds have been fired.

Always a good idea to at minimum inspect the firearms before firing since the guy in QC could have been having a really bad day.

I don't normally volunteer this information but since someone asked, I will share my coveted procedure:

On shots 1-10 I clean the barrel after every round but starting with the first odd shot fired by using a bore snake and CLP, after every even round I clean the barrel with a different bore snake using Hoppes #9. On shots 11-23 I clean the barrel on every odd round with the bore snake and the hoppes # 9 then every other even round with the bore snake and CLP. For shots 24-51 I clean the barrel every 3rd odd round with a nylon round brush soaked in Rem Oil and every other even round with a bore snake and CLP alternating with the other bore snake and Hoppes #9 for the shots in between the other even shots. The critical factor is to let the barrel cool completely down between every 3rd cycle of cleaning between even shots and only cool down 50% between every 2nd cycle of odd shots. From shots 52-109 let the barrel cool down 50% and then use the bore snake and hoppes #9 to clean the barrel every 5th round and Rem Oil and the bore snake every other even shot fired and the bore snake with CLP every other cycle of 5 shots after the 3rd 5 shot cycle that the hoppes #9 was used.

This procedure will definitely make your stock barrel shoot as good as any match barrel but only if you truly believe this to be true.

Are you kidding me? That's what I've been doing! And since that procedure lets me shoot only a few rounds everytime I go to the range, it saves me so much money on ammo costs. What's not to like?

Several have commented that pre cleaning seems to be the only way to get to know your gun prior to shooting it? So just tearing it down & checking it out and not cleaning doesn't suffice? As well, I damn well want a gun that can fire and shoot even if it is not pristinely clean and lubed

I am willing to bet the average guy - ones not posting here - just buy their guns and shoot them out of the box. And IMHO, they should be able to do so.

I usually go straight from the store to the range. I keep a bottle of oil in my range bag, but I've never used it for new guns. Never had a problem.

The product sounds awesome, and a few people who have tried it have posted rave reviews... but when every one of UV's posts is pushing the product, it's a big turnoff and makes me less likely to invest the $45 in a starter kit.
What I use works fine and has always worked fine. I'm always open to "better", but there comes a point when it's like living next door to an Amway rep. Ya, they're great products. Ya, they're priced "competitively".... but sometimes you buy something just hoping to get him to stop bugging you.

It depends on the gun.
Glock ships with a gold break-in grease and you want to run it until it is no longer apparent.

It's a gold grease with a metallic sheen.
I would presume small particles of brass to hasten break-in.

I haven't done any independent research, I was told by a Calgunner that is a trusted member not to clean the factory grease off.

my normal practice is to always strip and clean the gun, but i tried to NOT do that to the glock 17 g3, still ran insanely flawless, no hiccups what so ever !!!!
