Same thing happened to me in SAN. I requested a LEO, and two airport cops came, I gave them the key, and were back in 5 minutes. It still isn't legal, but it is better than letting the TSA, who are civilians, do it.

BTW the red card does not go in the gun case, it is stuck to the outside.........lets them know it has been screened.

Also, you lock your gun case with YOUR lock, the suitcase it is in with your TSA lock. Otherwise they say they can bust into the suitcase for secondary inspection and cut your lock.

Next time I'll ask for LEOs. What pissed me off last time was when trying to explain the procedures to the airline attendant, his supervisor came by and asked me who/what I was. I was like a civilian and why does it matter? I kindly let him know what was going on and stated I'm not giving my keys then showed him the TSA regs. He gave me some BS excuse that he knew what he was doing because he worked there and that TSA can bend the rules. I stood firm and let him know the only way they are getting my keys is if a supervisor stands there and watches them.

Funny part is when the supervisor left and the airline attendant requested me to place the card in my gun cases, he then understood why I didn't want to give my keys up. I popped open my pelican case and he saw my 2 ARs and Sig X5 and all the accessories I squeezed in there. He even admitted to me that TSA doesn't do what their supposed sometimes.

To the OP, just be prepared if it doesn't go the way others have explained it.

I'm pretty sure that federal law requires that the tag goes inside the gun case, NOT on the outside. They are not allowed to specially mark that the case contains a firearm.

IIRC, the card is opaque to X-ray, so they can see it when it is x-rayed.

pretty sure that if you have a firearm in the case, that the outer case can be locked with your lock. that is one reason why many travelers bring an "airplane" gun, even if they don't "need" a firearm where they are going, just so they can lock their luggage.

FUD.....The OP is in CA. No where does he say he's flying to a different state to pick up his new gun. He could be flying from Sacto to San Diego. About a 9 1/2 - 10 hour drive or only about an hour on the plane.

Actually..he does say the airport's involved were Sacto, Georgia and Florida.

If you're doing case-within-a-case, then no, the exterior case does not get the "own-lock" privilege if the interior hard case is locked. The interior hard case satisfies the federal transport regulations and it doesn't follow to the exterior case. The regulations attempt to prevent access to the firearm while checked as baggage, and the interior locked hard case does just that.

If there's no interior hard case (like if just pack the firearm in a gun-rug or rifle-sock) then the whole case gets the "own-lock" privilege/requirement.

I have flown with my ruger gp 100, ar-15 and my savage deer rifle without problems.... Kinda funny having to open my gun case and having everyone's eyes get big when i placed the tag inside.

Flew down from Sac to L.A. (to get pistol), then flew from L.A. to Atlanta with pistol, then back to California. So no "importation".

ive flown a couple of times, some airlines have their own reg's, gun in approved container and locked, then goes in a 2nd hard sided container, i had to go buy a hardside suitcase just for that.
