    Browning Hi-Power?

I have been debating about picking up a Browning Hi-Power.

Here is what I like about it...

    1. Single action only that carries cocked and locked
    2. Rich military history behind it
    3. Used but fully functional and reliable on-list guns available at decent price
    4. Nice project gun while still a good shooter
    5. Won't have to reinvent the wheel to master shooting it since I already own/use a 1911.
    6. So long as it is made by Browning, Blue and a 9mm Hi-Power it is "on the list", which means I can get a used but fully funcitonal and reliable one at a decent price and make it a project gun.

Where is what worries me...read not so great things about the following...

    1. Sights (not sure they can be relpaced without full on machining the slide)
    2. Trigger (heard it is a crunchy ugly trigger pull)
    3. Safety (small and difficult to use)
    4. Weight (already have one really heavy handgun in my 1911 it would be nice if it carried better)

What are the experts thoughts? Bear in mind it is suplimenting my 1911 and not replacing it.

Wonder if I can find an HMAS Hammersley Hat to go with it? Kidding. Anybody get the referrence? Anybody?

It is less about having the money and more about feeding the addiction. Can't you see me twitching?

I have heard the trigger can be improved my removing the magazine block. They point great.

Yes if you are smart enough to shoot a 1911, this will be no problem.

Best gun I ever owned. I bought in back in 1980.

I would buy one but not new for $900+ honestly if they were $500 I would go for it!

Unless you plan on carrying it, the sights and safety are a non issue....I have Novaks and a C&S safety on mine and to be honest, I enjoyed shooting it just as much when it was stock...in fact, I found the small fixed half moon sights were more precise for target shooting since they didn't cover as much of the target...the only thing that really needs work to enjoy shooting it is the trigger...and that's an easy fix...:0

3 day waiting period???? but I'm mad now!!!!!!

The H-P is one of my favorites.

                  1. Sights (not sure they can be relpaced without full on machining the slide) I believe you are correct on this one. While better sights would be an improvment, I have left mine alone and they work fine.

                  2. Trigger (heard it is a crunchy ugly trigger pull) It can be greatly improved by removing the mag disconect safety. Two improvements for the price of one. It will never be as nice as a good 1911 trigger. It is better than most other service pistols though.

                  3. Safety (small and difficult to use)Yes the original stock safety is to small. I had a Smith install the extended safety found on the newer guns (Mine was made in '76) and remove the right side lever as I didn't want an ambi safety.

                  4. Weight (already have one really heavy handgun in my 1911 it would be nice if it carried better)It is about the same weight as a steel framed 1911. What do I know, I carry a 4" Colt Trooper and don't complain about weight. The right holster and belt makes all the difference in the world.

I don't know about the sights. But you can get a better trigger by removing the MDS and you can install a larger manual safety. As for weight; I don't find it any heavier than a 1911.
                    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

The right waist line wouldn't hurt either.

I figured. I was just recognizing that I won't be filling the missing gap in my collection with regards to weight and size but rather getting more of the same. I want a Summer Cary gun, but the ones I like are WAY too expensive...or way to thick....or way too heavy...etc.

Well, in that case, why even ask? I'm picking one up today (it's day 11 ), it's a Mk. III. I'll let you know how it shoots.

I replaced the sights on one of my HPs with Meprolights.

No machining of the slide required.

I think it might depend on the year. I am no expert but while browsing some of the pictures online some look like the sights are machined as part of the slide and others are are clearly removable.
