    Help me decide...

I'm new to handgun but would like to change that. Currently I'm trying to find a right gun for me (would like to stay around $500). It seems I was able to narrow it down to two choices: Sig Pro and Glock 19.

Today I went to a local gun range (near Van Nuys) and tried both of them. I shot each one with about 25 rounds and was a little surprised of how bad of a shot I was. I could barely hit a small target at about 25 feet.

I shot my friend's .38 revolver before and did really well. My experience with 9mm was really surprising. Maybe these were abused guns from the range?

So, I was looking for some suggestions on which one I should pick and how I can improve my accuracy as a newb.

My main criteria (aside from the price) is for the gun to be very reliable and easy to clean.

Any suggestions are welcomed along with other models to consider.

Why 9mm, best way to improve accuracy is training, guidance, and practice.

A .22lr will get you all that way way cheaper than 9mm.

That being said, I am a gluck fan. My vote is for a G19 or G17 for you.

Hands down get the Glock 19:

      1) You cant get any easier than Glock to clean.
      2) Glock is probably THE most reliable semi-auto in the world.
      3) Sooner or later you will end up getting the Glock 26 sub compact i guarantee it. At least you will be able to use the G19 mags in it.
      4) If Gunners find out you chose a Sig Pro over a Glock 19 they will laugh at you.

Well you can't compare a revolver to a semi auto pistol since they are very different. You just need to get used to it.Glock would be a wise choice since parts are cheap and widely available.

Get a glock 19.... My first gun was a glock...except I got a glock 23 in 40 cal so then I wanted a 9mm to train and got a beretta m9a1.... Both good guns ... there's lots more upgrades out there for glocks.... but then again sigs are nice too....

you have obviously been doing some research because both of the semi autos you have mentioned are good candidates for ownership.

25 rounds shot for each semi auto could leave you with more questions than answers if you are new to handguns. go back to the range again and get better familiarized with these guns. if you have a friend that is better acquainted with handguns than yourself, bring that person with you for assistance and support.

My son has a glock 19, I shoot well with it, but I think a revolver is easier to clean. I myself would get a rock island 45 for the money you are spending. The reason you didn't do great with the semi's is they take some getting used to. You hold them different than a revolver and the glock is much lighter. You were smart to go and try them out. What ever you get, practice is a must.

i have a sig pro and a glock 17, and id definitely go with the g19 of those two choices. glock is way more simple, easier to clean, cheaper mags, cheaper upgrades, and cheaper parts. i like my sig pro, and have had it for many years, but my glock is my new best friend.

The Ruger SR9 or SR9c or the Smith & Wesson M&P9/9c are better choices than the Glock IMHO. Some people swear by Glocks, of course.

For $100 more you can get a Beretta 92fs which has a metal receiver which you may find that you prefer over the polymer. (I do.)

A lot of this is personal preference. If you found that you were shooting well with a 38 revolver, maybe you should be looking at those. You can get a Ruger GP100 for less than $600 and it will shoot both 38 and 357 rounds. A very versatile gun and beautiful to shoot and own.

                      My $.02.

Of the two you have listed I'd go with the Glock 19. Easy to clean and they are dead nutz reliable.

I had a hard time with the G19 until I added a slip on grip. Things got real easy after that.

Since you live in the SFV you can shoot one of my G19's with the grip. Send me a PM and we'll meet at my Club which is also in the SFV.

I have to agree with the others. The Glock system is an easier system to learn. A simpler battery of arms, consistent double action trigger, and rugged reliability make the Glock a no-brainer for your situation.

If you're really serious about owning a firearm, rent as many as you can to find which one appeals to you the most (meaning: which one you naturally shoot the best). That should really be your ultimate criteria, and not Brand X vs. Brand Y.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of firearms!!!

Thanks for the help. I'll probably also check out Smith & Wesson M&P9, but judging from overall responses, G19 is the way to go.

S&W 910 you can get one used for about 275-350.Alloy frame steel slide leaves some $$$ for shells holster and range time.
