I am going to be getting my 1st 1911 in the next week or so, and have narrowed the field. Based on all the threads I've read here, general consensus seems to be the Springfield Mil-Spec for a 1st, economical (sub $800) gun. Kimbers are usually discussed as higher priced, but generally good reviews too.

Now, my dilema. On sale this week are the following:
    Kimber Custom II for $599
Springfield Armory Mil Spec for $584.
Between these two, looking for recommendations.
Where did u find the Kimber Custom II for $599?

Definetely Kimber... I have the Tactical II and it's deadly accurate, I haven't even come close to wringing the full accuracy out of it yet. Kimber frames and slides are forged in the U.S. of A., and the small parts are MIM. I haven't had a single problem with the MIM parts on my Kimber in 1000 rounds, so I don't think you ought to worry too much about them. Kimber also has the beavertail safety and commander hammer, along with a match grade barrel. The base model Custom II is heads and shoulders above the others in that price range IMO.

Run. Run away from Kimber...OK any 1911 it is a disease. Save yourself. I bought a S&W PC1911 1.5 years ago. Just bought some custom colts.

Seriously, the kimber sounds like a great deal, but in the long run it won't be your last. Just have fun.

Springfield Armory Mil Spec for $584.
You should find a better deal than this. Catch Springfeild on sale for $450 at the same store.
