        In order to get a GEN4 you will have to be LEO or get it by single shot exemption. Which is why the OP made this post.

          Given a choice this would be my preference

          Gen3 = 9mm
          Gen4 = .40 S&W

          The dual recoil spring for the Gen4 was primarily created for the .40 Glocks IMO. Gen3 .40 caliber Glocks and previous generations were often accused of being undersprung. Numerous LEO agencies had issues with mounted lights. The dual recoil spring is supposedly an "improvement" to address this issue. Gen3 Gock 17's with its single coil recoil spring is a paragon of modern reliability and durability. Pretty much the gold standard. A heavier recoil spring introduces a new variable for me. An unpredictable variable. The gun may now possibly be oversprung which may or may not be a good thing. Before the Gen4 G17 it was once in a very blue moon I ever heard anyone having issues with a Gen3 G17 esp. a new one no matter what ammo they used. Now with the Gen4 G17 we are seeing more than I've ever seen before in the 10 yrs I've been perusing internet gun forums. People are proud to state their Gen4's G17's are going hundreds to thousands of rounds with "no problems". All that says to me is they're proving to be avg. in terms of reliability so far. Lots of guns can go thousands of rounds with "no problems".

          The Gen3 G17 and other 9mm Glocks have amassed hundreds of thousands of rounds of reliable service through individual samples, tens of thousands through many more, and a well earned trust over the years. A track record like that isn't something that shouldn't be given or assumed simply because it has the same model number and name. As far as I'm concerned the Gen4 G17 is gonna have to earn that kind of trust all over again now.

            I own a glock 19 gen. 3 and I'v put maybe 2000 rounds through it so far without one malfunction! I absolutely love it. The gen 4 is a new design so to say and if I were you, Id wait a few years to see how the gen. 4 plays out. So far a few people have had problems with them ( no one I know because no one I know has a gen. 4) but this could just be over rumored. I like anything I buy to have a proven track record, like buying a honda civic. Proven track record for reliability. Chose for yourself.

              What's a good price the 21sf could be had for. Riflegesr has them for $550+ fees. From what I heard that's a tad high/normal

              Edit: gatta <3 autospell not!
              That's a good price you won't be able to beat that if it really is an SF most shops I've seen them at charge atleast 595 I might have to pick that up after I send them my HK45 tomorrow and wait 30 days. The problems the Gen 4s were having I think was with the 9mm glocks having a .40 cal strength recoil spring but IDK I do know that Glock has taken care of the problem.

              A lot of companies are going to be making different backstraps for the Gen 4's you can count on that. I was trying to find the video and I couldn't but some guys are making backstraps modeled after different grip angles they had a 1911 a Sig and another one I forget. Its something to think about the Gen 4s are going to be around for a long time.

                  I had a gen 3 19 that I sold and bought a gen 4 17 to replace it. the Gen 4 has been great. 900 rounds thru it with out one single FTF or FTE. The only problem I have is with the weaker ammo, it will fling brass back at your face. Maybe 1 out of 20. This didnt happen in my Gen3 19 with weak ammo. I still really like the Gen4 17 and will be buying a Gen4 26 this week after my 30 days are up. I do find that I hold tighter rapid fire groups with the Gen4 vs Gen3 9mms.

                    When I bought my Gen4 from Tracy rifle and pistol it was really no diffrent than buying any other handgun. they replace stock barrel with a long barrel and use a blocked mag that can not accept any rounds. You walk out and walk back in and they remove those parts and install back the originals and your done. Only added 3-4 minutes to the process over a on roster handgun
