I'm trying to learn from the experience of others. If there is a good reason for using night sights on a pistola I want to know about it!

I've been chewing on the "more useful outdoors" comments a few people have made. I can kinda see what people are talking about, but at the same time I'm having a hard time coming up with realistic scenarios where I'd be saying, "Dang! I'm sure glad I threw down the extra $100 for those night sights. If I had only had regular sights I'd have been screwed!"

I'm a huge believer in taking extra precautions in case things don't work out exactly like I wished. In an outdoor situation, where I for some reason I don't have a flashlight, maybe nights sights would be really useful. I don't often find myself tracking down wounded bear in the woods, in the dark, with no flashlight, but apparently that can happen
If you think they're not useful, then don't get them.

Some people here have already explained how they could be useful. You refused those explanations.

I've heard noises at night in the house and grabbed my pistol. It was very helpful to remain in the dark while seeing where my sights were. I know the layout of the house. I know the usual noises. I know which floorboard creeks and which does not. I don't need lights to get around in my own house. I do need night sights to see where the muzzle of my pistol is pointed at.

you've never been shooting outdoors at night?

It doesn't need to be pitch black for them to be usefull, trust me. I've shot a Glock with factory sights in low light, it's quite interesting.

Im sorry, everyone is entitled to thier opinions. But comments like these REALLY concern me, and see them often on gun forums. You hear a noise in your back yard/in your house at night, you don't NEED to see what your shooting at? Could be the neighbors kid toilet papering a tree, and you might put 5 rounds in him?!?!? Maybe a family member letting themselves in unexpectedly? Sorry folks, but I personally will never pull the trigger unless I have a light/lighting and can ACTULLY CONFIRM my life is in danger.

Did I say pull the trigger at a shape in the dark? I said it helps me to see where my gun is pointed at in the dark.

Kids TP the tree? They wouldn't be in the house, would they?

Family member making an unannounced visit? Why are they moving my TV?

Night sights is an added option. It gives the user more flexibility.

If you don't think they are useful, then don't get them. I'm merely stating how they could be useful.

other than the money, what is the downside to them is how I see it?

so they work in the day (like normal sights) and they work at night (unlike some normal sights). how is that a lose situation?

night sites also help you find your gun in the dark, most night sites can not be seem by a person in front of you if the gun is pointed at them. i can see by these posts some people here do not know the different types of night sights and fiber optics sights or both (TFO) on the market

I think some of us just are unwilling to shell $100-150 just to add night sights to their night stand/shooting range handgun. That's all.

I'm happy with the guns I got that already had night sights put in, but I'm a bit reluctant to pay low 3-digits to add 3 glowing dots to a gun that doesn't have them. Mostly because, as some others pointed out, it's probably not a good idea to shoot at a moving silhouette you can't identify. I don't know.

I'm good enough a shot that I can hit center mass at 15 years without being able to see my sights, but I can't really think of a scenario where I would take the chance of hitting someone in an environment that's so dark that I need night sights to focus. If I'm in a situation where I'm actually going to align my sights like I do at the range, then I probably don't want to shoot at someone whose face I can't clearly identify as being a foe.

                  Does that make sense?

If it's a situation where I need to use my gun in the dark, I'll need a light to help identify my target. Night sites aren't going to help doing this, or needed IMO. When I point a gun, I know where it's pointed.

I agree night sights are a joke. Flare gun in one hand, pistol in the other. Don't need no night sights.

The biggest advantage of NS's that was explained to me was when there was inconsistant light sources. For instance when firing at someone who is slightly illuminated with a nearby street light. You have enough light to see what you're firing at, however the light source is inconsistant. The biggest advantage NS give you is a consistant sight picture regardless of your light source. Using the sillouettes of the sights works, however it's dependent on having a decently illuminated background to compare against. Considering I've never used a gun in self defense, obviously these don't come from experience. However I rely on the word of others who have, who highly recommend NS on a defensive pistol.

So you call the OP a hater & yet your only "experience" is what you have read in this thread........

                            As for NS:
I don't replace my non NS, but don't mind them on the pistols that have them. I just have no need for NS

I have the Tru glo TFO's on my G19. They really pop out in daylight shooting and good at dusk. At night they are easy to pick up. Picking up your black or painted sights in ambient light can be difficult at the wrong angle. I had a conversation with a officer at the range last week about night sights. He said one of the officer's was involved in a shooting with three suspects and did not have night sights. The officer had felt he would never need them but after that shooting he had them installed. He spoke to other officers in a training session after the shooting and stated he was unable to pick up his sights in the low light condition. You may not need them but you might at some point in time. I never used them until I did a few tactical night shoots and at certain angles I was unable to pick up my sights. Not for everybody. Shooting with a flashlight requires a lot of practice, improper use can get you in some serious trouble.
