Glock 38 .45 GAP - Thoughts?

I'd pass on the GAP and stick with 45 ACP. But really I think a Glock in 9mm or 40 is a better choice. 9 is $20 for 100 rds at WM.

I have a 37 and a 39. Buy your ammo online. Generally, stores don't carry it. It's a .45 ACP in a 9mm size. Why is that bad? All the above haters have obviously never owned one. Ammo is as easy to get as any other ammo. I shoot .357 Sig too. I'm like that. Just paid $200 for 500 rounds of Federal .357 shipped. Last time I bought .45 GAP I paid $320 for 1000 rounds of Speer Gold Dots shipped. Sounds like a deal to me. .45 ACP? That's what your dad shoots! Heh!

The .45 GAP threads here on Calguns generally go one of two ways.

The first way is where the people who actually have experience and/or knowledge about the round discuss the virtues of the round and its advantages.

The second way is where people who have no idea what they are talking about come into the thread just to add their "OHH OHH ME TOO ME TOO" opinion.

I've had some .45 GAP Brass on my Brass thread Trying to sell it for a While.
Nobody wants the stuff .........

I owned a 38 and reloaded for it.

Here's what I can tell you with real world experience.

1) t\There is very little reloading data for the GAP. So you have a very limited choice of powders and bullet weights to load for. You MUST collect all your brass and inspect it after every outing for cracks/damage.

2) GAP brass is nearly impossible to find and when you do, they are in small quantities. So keep ALL your brass and don't lose it.

3) Buying loaded ammo is more expensive over its 45acp counterpart. If you like wasting money on a novelty cartridge that's fine, but there is no advantage to the GAP over the ACP. Both cases are 1/2" in diameter and as such only so many can fit in a magazine.

4) If you have small hands and are considering the 38 for this reason, I suggest you try the 30sf or a commander 1911 for fit. Both of these are fine firearms that fit smaller grips.

The idea was to get a .45 caliber in a 9mm package. The GAP ballistics were identical to the most popular ACP loads, thanks to Science, but reloaders had a harder time of it.

The problem with the Glocks, and the few other makes that tried it, was that they discovered they still needed a .45 ACP-sized upper end to make it work reliably. So the frame ended up a little smaller, but the overall envelope was just as big as a .45 ACP or a 10mm, for that matter. So there is no practical, real-world reason for the GAP round.

The sole purpose for the round in the eyes of God, John Moses Browning and little ole me was the EMP, but Springfield screwed the pooch on that one. If they had kept it in .45 GAP, the round would probably be a lot more popular today.

Thank you everyone for your input and advice. This is why I love these forums! I think I'm going to stick with a 9mm Browning Highpower instead and just save up for a 1911.

By the way, any input on Para Ordinance 1911's? I've been looking at a few and they seem like a good deal for their price (I think the one I was looking at was $500 on Budsgunshop.com

I owned a 37 when they first came out and I had a good cheap source for ammo, as soon as I lost that source I sold it without losing too much money and bought a G19 IMO there is no reason to buy anything GAP considering there are better choices now that didn't exist then.
