Kimber mags?

I'm thinking about getting a Kimber Pro Carry HD II and was looking around for extra mags to get as it only comes with one 7 rounder. Will it take 8 rounders like other full gripped 1911s or will it only take 7s?

What are good 1911 mags to get, btw? Previously I had just bought whatever they had on the rack at Turners and I know I can do better than that!

The Pro and Custom take full size magazines (8 rounds). The Compact and Ultra take the smaller magazine (7 rounds). I have no idea why Kimber gives the hobbled mags out when they could take 8 rounders. I use Wilson Combat mags, which you should be able to find on-line for around $25-$30 each.

Wilson mags or McCormick Promags. Both are very reliable and both companies have great customer service. Most major production 1911s still come with 7 round mags (SA & Kimber, and I'm pretty sure Colt). Couldn't say why they do that, whether it's cheaper, or to stick to "original spec" (doubtful). But you've got the right idea getting yourself some good quality 8 rounders, poor quality magazines can be the source of many problems people may encounter with 1911s. For what its worth I've not had a single malfunction in thousands of rounds since I got my SA Mil-spec. I bought McCormick promags the day the pistol arrived though, and the factory mags are still in the box.

It is more the other way around. The full size guns take 7-round mags. The smaller ones take 6. You can buy mags that have different followers and springs in order to fit 1 more round in each mag. As a rule they do not function as well as a standard cap mag but some work well. I have a pair of Wilson 47D 8-rounders that seem to work well. I also have a Chip McCormick mag that works well. It isn't hard to get better quality then the factory Kimber mags.

Another vote for Wilson Combat 47D mags. They work reliably in all my 1911s.

Apparently no one else here uses them, but I've had excellent results with Novak's nickel 8-round, polymer bottom mags. No issues at all.

I got them from the seller of my for a good deal and haven't needed or wanted to change since. Sig uses them for their GSRs. They're significantly cheaper than others and feel very solid. Perform that way, too!

Kimber Pro-Tac Magazines Work Well For Me & Mine...

I've actually had excellent results with the Kimber Pro-Tac Magazines. I purchased mine from The Armory and they have worked in two Colts, one Baer, and a Springfield custom. The Pro-Tacs are stainless and kinda look as though they were patterned after Wilson 47D's... Go figure. I don't know about the non- Pro-Tac Kimber magazines, maybe those have issues?

+1 on that! Kimber mags are crap. Get good mags, they are worth the price. Can't tell you how many people subject their guns to multiple round trips to the factory for service when the problem can be solved by buying quality mags.
