Just a side note. If you have the option of getting out of dodge rather than fighting it out...I recommend doing so. Nothing in your home (aside from loved ones) is worth dying or killing for. That is what home owners and renters insurance is for. We are all Alpha males here. Our egos tell us to cowboy up and hunt the suckers down. That just isn't smart. Not if you have a choice. Grab your gun, your loved one's, and get out of the house and call 911 or if that is not an option bunker down and call 911. Let the cops risk their lives as well as the law suit from the bad guy's loved ones if they kill or injury him. Once you pull the trigger, justified or not, your freedom and finances are in jeopardy and that is if you are lucky enough to live to regret it. Being judged by 12 may be better than carried by 6, but neither is the preferred option. The day you have to use your gun is going to be one of the worst days of your life...no matter how macho you are. It is bring on the clowns...I mean lawyers time.

I have a child so a safe is neccasery for me. It doesn't take me long to open and the key is hidden within reach in case the batteries are dead or some other issue. Since I have it in a safe I have my CZ with round in the chamber and the hammer down.
Before I had kids I would just set my carry piece on the nightstand and then put it back on when I woke up.Comment

Sig P239 (9mm) in the nightstand w/Mag inserted but empty chamber, Streamlight in charger that's mounted to nightstand, and I've practiced locating them in the dark so it's muscle memory.
870 is loaded but not chambered in the unlocked safe in the closet.
Dog w/bionic freakin' hearing sleeping next to me.
When I leave, nightstand gun gets locked in the safe and put back in the nightstand when I get home. I just recently got the safe and I can't tell you how much more secure I feel when I'm gone.Too many hobbies, Too little time.
Mind you, I'm 5'7", 180, with a visible Ab...Comment

Mossberg 500 with side saddle in cruiser ready state (hammer down, empty chamber) next to the bed is my first go to firearm.
Taurus .357 revolver in a simple lock box unlocked at night in the bottom drawer of my night stand is my backup
I'm confident in using either one and I wouldn't be heartbroken if they were impounded after an episodesigpic

IMO you don't need those safety devices for most semi-auto pistols, and specifically the 1911. As Mas Ayoob points out, it already has a very effective child-safe device. It's called a recoil spring. Without a bolt carrier handle (like a rifle would have) young children are physically incapable of racking the slide. They don't have the grip strength, and you can ask them to try it and see for yourself. Just keep it in condition 3 and all is well. If it has a full-length guide rod, so much the better.I agree with this, but you have to consider that some of us have very curious kids. Unfortunately I'm having to sacrifice the convenience of instant readiness during the day for the safety of my kids. That said, once the little money pits leave, The safety devices are coming off!
I may or may not have kept a 1911 in condition "2.5," meaning with an empty chamber but with the hammer cocked. If I did such a thing, it would have been because my wife didn't have the grip strength to defeat the child safety device either,
and racking the slide is slightly easier if you only have to compress the recoil spring without having to cock the hammer as well. Obviously, that would not work if the children were stronger; you have to exercise appropriate judgement in such matters.
By the time they're strong enough to rack the slide, hopefully they will be gun-safe.

What do you need guns for if you are going to send your children, seven hours a day, 180 days a year to government schools? What do you need the guns for at that point?-- R. C. Sproul, Jr. (unconfirmed)

there is no such thing as a low threat area. fact is that the nicer your neighborhood is the more likely you are to suffer from a robbery. if somebody kicks in your door you will have a few seconds to react. and that is total time to react. its similar to driving a car. first your mind has to recognize something has happened, then process that information into a reaction. if you dont have your gun on you and loaded, then you will most likely fall victim to the circumstance. i would estimate you would have approximately 3-5 seconds to initiate a defense. it honestly could be less than that depending on how organized the criminals are. the objective in a hot prowl burglary is to enter fast and hard. and take control of the house. now with that out of the way. i typically have a 9mm loaded, chambered and on me. then there is a saiga shotgun loaded but not chambered leaning against the wall next to my bed. i leave it unchambered because if given the chance to use that gun i want it to make that classic ak sound when putting the first round in. now instead of dealing with the safe when leaving the house. when i leave i just throw them in my bag and into the trunk of my car. the bonus is that i always have a 9mm and a shotgun on me.Natural selection has arrived!!!Comment

Glock 23 9 in the mag 1 in the pipe and a extra mag next to it. Have a key pad mini safe but will be buying a biovault soon. Live in a decent neighborhood but things happen fast so I like to practice during the day some simple drills. Be safe and protect your family.CARDIFF GIANTComment
