question about releasing the slide on a Glock

I practice dry firing at home sometimes, and later in the evenings get a little concerned about the kind of loud sound of the slide coming back forward after pulling and releasing it (I'm in a duplex, share walls with a neighbor)..
So that it is quieter, I started thinking I could slowly bring the slide back forward (not sure if i'm explaining this right), instead of letting it just fly forward.

My friend told me to never do this... He couldn't explain why, but said that he was specifically told that forcing the slide to come back forward slowly was harmful to the gun. I don't do it now, but am curious what is harmful and damaging about it?

Dry firing when done safely is good training. I say let the slide fly. You are building muscle memory. You will fight how you train. Just don't train after 10pm.

Maybe he's confusing letting it softly slide back when you're actually chambering a round....? Makes no sense why not slamming it would harm the gun. Sounds like a doofus to me.

riding the slide forward so it is quieter is bad muscle memory because you dont want to ride the slide when you need to defend yourself it will cause the round to not chamber properly and the slide will not be locked forward properly (out of battery) when dry firing in your house use snap caps and just rack it and let the slide fly like you would normally do it is good practice

You can easily move the slide about half an inch to recock it, avoiding the slam noise.

You only need to pull the slide back a little to cock it if that's what you are doing (half an inch or so). No need to lock it all the way back and release every time.

Also, to answer the question, no harm to disengage the slide lock whilst holding the slide to let it forward gently. As others said, it's not what you want to do when actually chambering a round though.

It is not that loud, trust me. I doubt your neighbors can hear the sliding racking. And you can also just pull the slide back slightly to re cock the striker.

your "friend" is full of it. if it can withstand the force of a mini explosion it can withstand a gentle slide rack
