Not quite. There is no requirement to show proof of any safe or anything else when buying a handgun. When you buy a handgun, the only requirement is that it leaves the shop you DROSed it at with a CA approved safety device. Whether it came with the gun, you buy it and bring it and a receipt that's less than 30 days old when you come to pick up, or you buy one from the shop...the gun just has to leave with a lock...that's all.

Because the rat-fink BATFE refuses to accept CA's safe affidavit as proof of ownership of a 'safety device'. It now works only for long guns.

Typically, you will have to buy a new lock. See the wiki link in my previous post.
Yeah, I had looked it over, but I guess I was just over analyzing it. I appreciate the help from all of you. That's money well-saved. There are no kids in the house and I have a non-DOJ approved safe, but one just the same.

If it's able to keep the gun as secure as you feel you need, then awesome.

Just hit up wal-mart. Buy a cable lock for 5$ before you go to get the gun. Then return the cable lock (unopened if possible) to the walmart on the way home from picking the gun up after the 10-day.

ALso note: Handguns need to be transported unloaded in a locked container, and if you're going within 1000 feet of a school (damn near everywhere) you'll need a locked container for ANY gun. Note: There's no requirements for sturdyness, hardcase, or quality; it just has to have a way of locking that keeps you from being able to touch the gun.

My Sig came with an included cable lock AND a lockable case. From what I understand I could just keep it in that lockable case although that would not prevent it from being stolen. Instead I keep the empty mags locked in the case and the gun in the safe which is hidden and bolted and epoxy attached on all sides.

The safe is not "DOJ Approved" blah blah blah because it has two bolts instead of three but quite frankly this is why the Government is bankrupt... it keeps putting its nose where it doesn't belong. For the size of my safe, a third bolt itsn't going to do it any more good.
