    Defective 9mm Federal Round

So I went to the range today. While shooting up 100 rounds of 9mm Federal rounds (box of 50 115 grain FMJ), I found one weird round. In my head I'm thinking, my USP has never failed and will probably shoot this one.

A buddy of mines convinced me to keep it and notify Federal of the defect. I tossed the box that it was in originally so if there are any batch information that helps them, it is gone.

I wonder if it will chamber? My HK hasn't failed me yet on all kinds of ammo. This would maybe be the first round it couldn't go bang on? Now I'm curious.

Anyone ever find stuff like this in the factory Federal ammo?

It might chamber or, it might fire out of battery and possibly cause harm to you or someone else near by. This is just another reason that I trust my reloads over factory ammo. IF I have a problem with my loads, I know who is responsible and who to blame for the poor QC.

I would not try to fire it... at least not in a gun that I care about, and not without a steel face shield.

The primer could blow out the back and cause all kinds of problems for the gun and for you.

Contact Federal. You'll probably get a free box of ammo for your trouble.

No...seriously. I wouldn't shoot it. I was just thinking that I stuff rounds quickly in my magazine via my uplula. This really stood out when I grabbed it.

Thinking about the catastrophic failure makes me shudder.

it's not likely going to chamber.. you can see this by slow chambering a dummy/snap cap.. the breechface slowly contacts the back of the bullet and allows it to slide up and behind the extractor. The gun doesn't chamber by slamming the extractor over the case rim..

The primer is mostly likely going to catch on the bottom of the slide as it slides forward and up.. If it' did manage to get into the chamber, it'd likely cause your gun to be so out of battery, it still woudln't fire..

Now if you drop this round into the chamber from the breech port, nose first, and then released the slide forward.. All bets are off..

Sent a message to their contact URL on their website along with the picture above. I'll post back their reply...when or if I get it....

Might be old news to some of you...but I noticed a warning on their site for .45ACP...

some of the Federal .45 production has been recalled (probably old news): http://www.turners.com/images/federal_recall.pdf

                    And now this thread...

I think I'll stay away from Federal (for a while anyway)...

There have actually been two recalls on .45 within the last 6 months. The first was Remington, the 2nd (most recent, not really old news) is Federal.

Reload or factory, it doesn't matter, dont shoot that round buddy. Doesn't look safe at all.

Yup... would be safer to just toss it into the camp fire

Come to think of it, the one and only time my Glock 19 "jammed" was with a Federal Champion 115 grain FMJ bought at WalMart. I think the technical term for the type of jam is "stovepipe". And no, I wasn't limp wristed, actually fired two handed, but it did feel and sound kinda funny. I was with my brother who was visiting from Canada, so I got embarrassed and hastily cleared the gun and resumed firing. I should have picked up the shell and investigated further.
