    Second Hand Grip

So I read over the law, and it states that a hand gun is an AW if it had a detachable mag AND a second hand grip. Does this mean if you have an AR style pistol with a BB and 10rd mag (non-detachable mag) you can still put on a forward grip?

    Or am I missing something?

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
    (4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
    (A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
    (B) A second handgrip.
    (C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer
to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
    (D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
    (5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.

I'm pretty sure a second hand grip on a handgun makes it an AOW.

Do not put a forward grip on a pistol.

Ah, I see said the blind man to his deaf brother:

Any Other Weapon (AOW) - Any National Firearms Act (NFA) firearm not otherwise categorized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as a short-barreled rifle, modern shoulder-stocked pistol, short-barreled shotgun, machine gun, sound suppressor (silencer), or destructive device.* Included in the list of AOWs are firearms disguised so they are not readily recognizable as firearms, such as pen guns, cane guns, and wallet holsters that hide the outline of the firearm and allow it to be fired while holstered.* Also included are pistols with both front and rear pistol grips, handguns with smooth bore barrels less than 18" in length and intended to fire shotgun shells; and combination rifle/shotguns with barrels over 12" but under 18", provided each chamber is single shot and only can be manually reloaded.* The Federal Transfer tax on an AOW is $5.

You are correct. The BATF has said that you can put on an AFG without violating any NFA rules. From what I've read California has not made a determination on the AFG.
            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Within CA law, a forward pistol grip on a bullet buttoned AR pistol is LEGAL.

It's the BATFE's interpretation of the Federal AOW law you run afoul of. Therefore, it's a no go without a tax stamp.

The AFG has been ruled by the Feds as not turning a pistol AR into an AOW. In CA, the issue is moot because of the first sentence. The bullet button removes restrictions on the other items (threaded barrel, accepting mag outside the pistol grip, etc).
