Considering a Springfield 1911a1 GI

I'm not really worried about the sights on the gun. Just how the average quality control is. Any recomendations on where to pick one up?

If purchasing a Springfield inspect before you buy.... Would not suggest purchasing sight unseen! Springfield can be hit & miss.

Okay, sights is subjective but posts like that ^ scares me away from buying a 1911. I guess I have to buy my own to determine if I like 1911s or not!

I have a Springfield Gi like I mentioned above. I posted how much I liked in a thread I made. I had three malfuntions when shooting mine. Mine is new. Everyone I talked with says put 1000 to 1500 rnds thru them to break them in.
Malfuntions were failure to eject. Still have not got the concept of what stove piping exactly is but the shell just didnt eject! Just remember when getting one of these its not a Glock or Sig that just runs out of the box. JMO

I took delivery of a GI model a few weeks back. I like the sights, but I'm old enough to have actually shot these things on active duty, so they brought back memories. I do have a FTF every first round though. I'm going to put another 100 through it and see if it helps.

Even with the probs, I would still say get it. I think the GI is cool as ****. Plus I picked it up for $500 brand new!

I also have a GI & I must echo the comments about the small sights. I've never had any issues with it but I use quality magazines. If I could do it over again I'd buy the Milspec. For one, the GI sights are tiny & not easily replaced, also, if you use a high grip the hammer bite is going to get you. Everything else are just bells & whistles.

I have had one for the past four years. It was my first 1911 and out of the box it shoots great. I have added a new set of springs and did a trigger job and it shoots even better. Springfield is also a great company, if you have any problems with the gun they will fix it for you without hassle.

Another gun to look at is the RIA 1911 gi fs. Great gun. Eats anything you feed it and its cheap.

i just got one and it shot great. now it will undergo a host of enhancements yet keep a spartan GI appearance. good buy, but yes, springers are hit and miss.

Why don't you get the SA Mil-Spec instead of the 45 GI?

The reason I bring it up is because both guns are practically the same thing, though the Mil-Spec has better sights AND it comes with a lowered/flared ejection port. This "update
on the port ensure for a more positive extraction. It also allows for live cartridges to be more easily extracted if you had to unload.

I agree, the Mil-spec is my preference due to the lowered ejection port and sights also.

Springfields are much more "hit" than miss, at least compared to Kimber's imho. And Springfield has the best warrranty in the business.

i vote for the mil spec also, just because of the sights. it might seem cool at first to have original gi sights but they get old after a while of shooting. also, from what i've seen, the finish of the us made ones are better than brazil made ones, especially on the edges.

also, i just saw a cimarron version of the 1911 and it looks very good. deep blue finish, no trigger well cuts, smooth mainspring housing. kind of a m1911 replica. i would have gotten it if i didn't put money down on another gun.

to get fairly authentic the springfield GI is pretty close for the cash. some may mention rockisland but that company thought it would be a great idea to put ROCKISLAND taking up the whole length of the slide.
