    SAO Revolver conversion

Curious if anyone has dealt with a Double action to Single Action Only conversion where the cylinder still cycles on trigger pull, but the hammer remains stationary for the SAO exemption.

Had a revolver shipped to a ffl in Cerritos, but when it came time to start the 10 day wait I was told that they never encountered a single action only conversion where the cylinder still cycles. So they said that they were going to hold off on the 10 day process until they got an answer from the CA DOJ.

Seller contacted the doj before shipment to Comyfornia and said it was all good and a go, and I don't see a reason why cylinder cycle should play a part in the single action exemption, but you never know I guess.

    Yes, I have.

Due to the design of the gun's lock-work the cylinder has to cycle because the part that makes it cycle (the "hand" in S&W nomenclature) is attached to the trigger. So when the trigger moves rear-ward (whether by cocking the SA hammer, or pulling the trigger as if you were trying to fire the gun DA) the cylinder will rotate. And since the hammer does not move while pulling the trigger, the gun does not meet the definition of DA.

Here's a pic of the lockwork on a SAO Model 14 to show the guys doing your transfer:

Thanks Black Talon. Makes sense that it's sao even with cylinder cycle, but you never know in this state. Guess I just have to wait for the FFL to contact me, or to go down there myself to see if they've gotten the ok yet.

These are the internals of the revolver i'm getting. #2 was removed to remove the Double action feature.

Sounds interesting. Although it cant hurt to have DA available on a revolver.

Oh I plan on converting it back to DA/SA, I just need it in SAO to have it imported to this state. D=

A double action revolver is defined as one that performs two actions during the trigger stroke.

            1st. The hammer is cocked.
2nd. The hammer is released from the cocked position firing the revolver.

Unless they can get the revolver to perform both actions with a single trigger pull, it is a single action. Since the hammer isn't cocked during the trigger pull, it doesn't meet the criteria of a double action. The cylinder indexing isn't relevant to this definition. Simply put if the hammer has to be manually cocked in order to fire the revolver it is a single action revolver. The FFL is being overly cautious.

Either that or the ffl doesn't know what a single action revolver is.
              Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Yea, figured they were just being overly cautious. Probably head down tomorrow to see if they got their answer from the DOJ, if not, then i'll be a little annoyed, as it's been lil over a week now. :x

                Appreciate the responses guys. ^_^
