1.Iron Sights or The Shootist in Murrieta (better prices but longer distance)

    2. Rent an XD, and M&P, and a Glock first, then decide which you like more.

And unfortunately, 500 wont be quite enough. Youll need at least 590.

For $500 max, you'd be looking at S&W Sigma or used XP/M&P/Glock or Sig Pro SP2022. I had bad luck with the Sig.

Besides Turner's & Iron Sights, there's also Duncan's Gunworks (San Marcos), Quantico (Oside), and Direct Action Solutions (Solana Beach) nearby.

Please do not get a sigma! unless its just for a plinking and even then. If you plan on using it for home defense...please do not get a sigma. Never said this before and my 1911 is giving me the stink eye, but get the glock. It will last a long time, very reliable.

sure the sigma will go bang every now and again, but if I had to trust my life with it, id be better off using it as a club

I was just at Parallax Tactical on Tuesday and they had some FNP's and Rock Island 1911's. It's about 20 minutes south of you but if 500 is your max, Turners specials would be where to look. Another calgunner posted a wednesday special on here for a RIA 1911 for 379 which comes out to around 440 or 450 OTD which is hard to beat for a brand new gun. Also it wouldn't hurt to look in the marketplace for used guns at good deals. Either way, best of luck to you.

I have purchased several firearms from Iron Sights. Good service, friendly people. Fair prices (not the cheapest, not the most expensive).

                      Depends.
SOme guys are great to deal with, quite a few have WAY too much attitude and really kill the customer service. "MY WAY or the HIGHWAY" approach. Talked to a few who've had teh same experience.

                      It's too bad too....

They have had a couple of "stinkers" that work there over the years, but if you know who to talk to, it can be a very pleasant experience.

Turners has the Ruger SR9, Ruger P95, and S&W Sigma on sale this week. Its hard to beat their sale prices.

                            SR9 for $439 + $39(tax) + $25(DROS) + $25(HSC) = $528 OTD.

                            P95 for $319 + $30(tax) + $25(DROS) + $25(HSC) = $399 OTD.

                            Sigma for $319 + $30(tax) + $25(DROS) + $25(HSC) = $399 OTD.

I second the Iron Sights as the place to buy. Usually if they don't have it at the store, they will order from the warehouse/distributor. Mine usually get to the store within 2 days of ordering. Second, as soon as they get the gun, if you don't have all the money, you can put down 30%, do the paperwork, and pay the balance when you pick the gun up after the 10 day waiting period. At Turner's, they won't start the 10 day waiting period until the gun is 100% paid for. Duncan's Gun Works in San Marcos will do the same thing as Iron Sights...put money down, do paperwork, and pay balance when you pick up the gun. BTW - Unless you are a LEO or have a VERY, VERY good reason to CCW, don't count on getting one from Sheriff Gore. Carrying for pure self defense isn't good enough.
