I don't really want a rail, and a crimson trace is not something I want to spend money on. This won't be a HD gun (that's covered with an Ithaca 37 with a Surefire 624 6V weapon light and Glock 17 with a Safariland RLS). It will be for the range and some competition work. A fun gun with decent sites, combat hammer, and a beaver tail with a speed bump.

So the Springfield still fits your requirements. It's just that to me 1911s can be one of those fun guns that when you figure out "Hey, this is an awesome gun but I wonder what can it really do?" You start to look at some of the great available upgrades for them. For me that would be a 1911 w/o the Series 80 firing pin block (better potential trigger). The Brazil Imbel thing is really no big deal, better forged than cast steel.

I shot both Springfield and Kimber before deciding on Kimber. I really liked both but went with the Kimber. I have had no problems with mine since break in period.

It takes about two minutes to remove the firing pin safety.

Springfield feels way less refined than those other two choices. I have no experience with Kimber, but have heard a lot of people I personally know who have issues with theirs. The S&W's are nice. Not the best trigger, but their overall quality and feel is very nice.

That said, if you spend a little bit more, get yourself the Dan Wesson Pointman 7. Buds gets them in occasionally: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/17997

These are the best ~$1k 1911's available.

WOW that does look nice. Would go well with the Dan Wesson 744VH in the safe. I wonder how hard it is to find one of these in stock?

If it's not a HD or SD gun, I would pick one with adjustable sights like bomar. Springfield loaded Target will be a very good choice or s&w. I would personally stay away from kimber.

Kimber Custom II is my vote! I currently have 2 Springfields and 1 Kimber Custom II.

The Kimber is more refined and just as reliable. Initially my 2 SAs needed some tuning and tweaking before they became realiable. The Kimber IS reliable from day 1.

That would be my choice also, but they're not easy to find. Especially for OP's budget :/

Are you talking about for detail stripping or for permanent mod. If its a permanent mod then I'm wrong about the Series 80s but if you're talking just for detail stripping then no thanks. I don't care for the firing pin safety because of its effect on trigger pull.

Btw, if one can find a DW PM7 then get that instead. I understand they were a great bargain.

I like the SIG 1911. Its got a beefier external extractor than the SW1911. I also like the fact that it does not have front slide serrations.

Only thing is the slide profile is different from traditional 1911 so its limited on holster selections. Luckily Blade-Tech makes em for the SIGs.

You can find the Nitron finish for $750 and the Stainelss Steel for about $200 more. I think its the best value out their but thats just my opinion.

Permanent mod, when I had my gunsmith smooth my gun a little he popped that out and it only took him a couple minutes. It cleaned up the trigger pull a lot.
