Sig makes a very nice gun and a light one at that. I got the handle CG's 226 and it was just as light as my Glock. I'd buy one in a second if I was in the market for another 9mm.

Wow, Sig and HK, both great choices. I have both and love them both. I really like the HK USP Compact and the P228. Can't go wrong with German weapons!

Walther P99. I prefer the pre-2004 appearance, the new ones look horrible to me. But the older ones didn't come in compact frames like the new ones.

If you have the scratchola, consider too an HK P7M8 or PSP. Look 'em up.

Look at Sig Pro's. I have one in .357 sig and love it.

I would recommend looking at Sig P225. Great shooting gun, also being a single stack it's just about perfect for smaller hands. Downside: may be difficult to locate.

As a bedside gun, Sig 226 or USP 9mm for sure. A beretta 92 isn't bad either- it's big, but feels light for its size (alloy frame).

For carry, the Sig 225 is best (small, thin and light), the USP is a bit chunky.

There's also the H&K P2000 and P2000SK now if she likes the DAO type trigger.

Assuming the polymer frame is a non-negotiable, choices are limited:

Sig Pro is a very nice gun. Had one in .40 and it always ran and was accurate.
Walther P99 - be sure to get the QA trigger, not the standard which is a unique two stage euro trigger. Interchangable back straps could make for a nice fit.
USP is a big gun, and will be a very soft shooter in 9. Fullsize ight be too big for a lady depending on size of her hands. Compact is better but still has a "man sized" grip. Has a looooooong and somewhat heavy DA trigger pull and reset IMO. But I'm a 1911 guy so take that with a grain of salt.

If she's been told by some tactical wizard that polymer will cushion the recoil or some other such superstition, maybe you can get her to consider some of the other mentioned guns with alloy or steel frames. If it is just about being lightweight, the alloy framed Sigs are really nice shooting guns.

I don't think the Sig P-series are polymer - think they are alloy frame mated to a steel slide.

If your budget is not much of an issue, go with the HK USP - $750 with night-sights at Turners.

If thats the case its hard to over look the XD. you can get it in a sub compact thats a pretty kick *** package.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to suggest the (Springfield) XD. If price is an issue, the XD is a good choice (under $500).

The standard Sig pistols (i.e. P2xx) are alloy framed. The Sig PRo series have polymer frames and are slightly cheaper.

Nothing is set in stone when looking for guns, I've learned. Regardless of what you're looking for, sometimes you just try one that makes you do a mental 180.

Yeah, I personally feel that the only trigger safety need is your finger. Keep it off the trigger and you won't have a problem. Its a simple fact that many just can't get through their head and why guns like glock get a bad rap. I think glock is one of the safest guns you could ever buy but you wouldn't know it by all the stupid LEO in New York who have no finger control.

Amen to that. Last week I went down to purchase a new pistol at the local shop. I had finally made up my mind and was going to buy an XD40 (don't like the grip angle on Glocks). Went in there with my mind set and walked out of there with a SA 1911A1 Mil-Spec (well actually with a slip saying I can pick one up 10 days later ) Go figure.
