Kimber 9mm and Para 9mm are not reliable either. FTE and FTF. Maybe it's the spring or ammo, but not good for self defense!

Shop smartly and you can buy a quality Springfield 9mm for your budgeted price range and as posted earlier, it's for HD or self defense, you get what you pay for most times with guns. Do you really want to trust your life to the lowest bidder? I spent 26 years having to do that (all my safety gear was Dept. furnished by the lowest bidder) not any more.

yeah, yeah , yeah the .45 is the only caliber worthy of using for self defense. Hogwash Many can't control or don't like the recoil of the .45, so they don't practice with it. If you don't practice, you are not prepared to defend yourself or anyone else. But, if you have a caliber that is controllable for you, that you will go out and practice with, then that is the caliber gun for you. With the great strides in ammunition performance these days one does not have to feel "under-gunned" for choosing a caliber that doesn't start with a 4 for self defense. Yes the bigger the hole..yadda, yadda, yadda I've seen my share of ballistic trauma over the years and there is no handgun death ray ammo yet. All calibers have failures to stop, even the .45 acp. The .45 acp while an exceptional anti-personel caliber, it is more expensive than other calibers to purchase or even reload for. I was hardcore .45 for years and due to injury started shooting a 9mm and found a new wonderful home. I now own more 1911 9mm's than 1911 .45's. They're more fun to shoot. I can shoot them faster (way faster split times) and I can carry more rounds per magazine (w/out sticking 2" out of my gun) I even have and carry a Springfield EMP 9mm CCW.
So many bag of wind .45 shooters out there that think a 9mm is merely a 45 on set on stun, I wonder why none will allow me to "stun" them with my little puny 9mm. I suspect they know what I know. It ain't the bullet (caliber), it ain't the bullet launcher (gun), it's the placement that makes a shooting sucessful or not.
So if can put your .45's (read: more than one shot) where they need to be, party on, if not think smaller and faster.

I picked up this Loaded 9mm for $850 in the marketplace last year and it's great.

Dang it! That's a nice pistol and the price was good for a 9mm 1911. They are relatively rare so I consider that a good price.

I have a couple of .45 1911s but I think a 9mm 1911 is really the best of both worlds. It's a 1911 platform which is great and it's a caliber that can be effective for SD/HD and is economical to shoot. What more can one ask for?

$850 for that SA Loaded is awesome. I'm working on getting a 9mm Kimber Stainless II for $850, but transfer and DROS will kick that up a chunk.

I only have a load of Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P, but I would be happy to report on reliability towards the end of Feb when I can get this thing.

I don't know this Taurus in particular but my experience with the brand is that while they are extremely reliable, they are not terribly accurate...

If it is on the list expect it to cost about $200-300 more than the exact same model that is not on the list...especially when it comes to 1911s.

As usual, people throw out all kinds of off list suggestions. Not like anyone has that list memorized. If you can find a store/ffl willing to do a single shot conversion and a seller out of state willing to ship here, you can get something off list. I don' know all the particulars, but stores advertise that in the commercial section all the time. So check there. I've only done it with an AR pistol.

Is it possible to find a reliable 1911 in 9mm for under $800? ..... I know Springfield and Kimbers make them but they are over $1k.... I have looked at the RIA 1911 9mm but I dont think they are reliable enough for self defense handgun.

OP, and all others interested in 1911 9mm,

Make sure you guys shoot a 1911 in 9mm before your pick one up. Like a lot of you guys I was always interested in the idea. But when I picked one up, I was a little disappointed. Even with 124grain 9mm, the slide is very sluggish when it cycles. I feel like the slide is too heavy for the 9mm. Besides the slow cycling, the 1911 in 9mm shoots like a laser gun.
