I just picked up my first 1911 yesterday. It's a Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bobtail. I've gone through many different types of guns and it took me years to finally reach this point and it is well worth it.
I've read about many peoples' praise of the 1911 on this forum and elsewhere and thought "Good for them, but the guns I have are good enough for me." I liked looking at pictures of 1911's but wasn't sure if I'd ever actually buy one. Out of all the 1911's I've seen, there was always one that caught my eye from the beginning, the Dan Wesson CBOB. There was just something about it that balanced every aspect of what I would be looking for in a 1911 if I ever got one: beauty, form, function, quality and price.
I own several Glocks and have stuck with those for years. I like that they are quality guns that function reliably when used. I have the Glocks I like and will not be getting rid of them. After buying Glock after Glock in different calibers though, I realized that I am just not real excited about each new one because despite the different calibers, they are basically the same which has it's advantages but isn't very inspiring. The 10 day wait for the next new Glock is simple for me, just let the days go by and I'll have it soon enough. Looking at other brand choices wasn't exciting me much either because they all seem to be a dime a dozen and everybody has one.
So one night I went on Gallery of Guns (Gungenie.com) and looked at the Dan Wesson's and to my surprise there was 1 CBOB in stock and it was available on the CA roster. I've heard that there are only about 600 of these made a year. It kind of made my heart flutter and I knew that this was probably meant for me and that if I didn't jump on it that there would be a slim chance to buy my own brand new CBOB. I waited about 15 minutes to contemplate if I could actually come up with the funds to buy this thing and came up with a plan of selling off a couple other guns I didn't shoot much to offset the cost of this gun.
I made the purchase and picked it up yesterday. Everything about the gun is high quality. The slide to frame fit is exceptional. There is no slop or play in any of the parts. There are no unnecessary safety items like loaded chamber indicators or internal locks to take the place of practicing safe gun handling skills. The gun fits perfect in my hand and all the contours and edges are hand smoothed to make this beautiful gun not have any snags or sharp edges. The Trijicon night sights are a plus as well to make it easy to pick up the sights in low light. This gun has every feature that I've been looking for in a gun and excludes none.
I cleaned, lubed and took it out shooting yesterday and it shot excellent. I shot 124 rounds of 230gr FMJ reloads through it and it had only one hiccup. One time the slide failed to return fully to battery on the last round in the magazine but other than that, the gun shot perfect. I know the gun needs more rounds to break in properly and I think it's off to a good start. Accuracy was great and I know that the gun is more accurate than I am. With more practice to get used to the gun, I can see this being one of my most accurate guns.
Getting this 1911 has really made me appreciate the differences in guns and also appreciate the quality and craftsmanship of a fine all-metal gun.
