glock 9mm vs .40

Same here for my Glock 22. I have the LoneWolf 40-to-9 barrel, and it has been flawless. It takes a few seconds to swap the barrel, and then you just use Glock17 (9mm) magazines ... bingo! I've yet to have a single failure of any kind, having shot hundreds of rounds.|

I went through the same decision you're trying to make. I had a G27 with a conversion barrel for 9mm and I shot either caliber whenever I wanted. I was going back and forth about the .40 vs. 9mm debate in my head and I decided I wanted to go with a dedicated 9mm for concealed carry instead of a .40 so I got a Glock 26.im really having a hard time choosing either a 9mm glock or a .40 glock. i have other handguns but mostly in 9mm. what would you people on CG perfer. and reason its so hard choosing is because i am wanting to do my own reloads in 9mm but it wouldnt hurt too bad buying a few boxes of ammo in .40 share your thoughts of what you perfer a 9mm or .40 and why
After a while I realized that I liked the variety of being able to shoot both calibers out of one gun and that it was only possible with the G27 and not the G26. My faithful G27 was just sitting there in the safe not getting used in either caliber and I started to miss it. I recently sold the G26 and don't regret it because the G27 is the exact same thing as the G26 when it's using the conversion barrel and 9mm magazines. I haven't ever had a malfunction with it using the conversion barrel.
I would say if you are on the fence about which to choose and you don't need it for a dedicated CCW gun then go with the .40 Glock because you can convert it to 9mm in a couple seconds with a conversion barrel if you choose. You can't convert the 9mm to .40. If you have the money and don't care about spending it then get a .40 Glock and a 9mm Glock.Last edited by jdg30; 01-30-2011, 8:38 AM.Comment

Oh great, another 9mm vs .40 vs .45 discussion ;-)
First read this: http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/9mm%20vs%2045.htm
IMHO, I can't find any evidence anywhere that one round is heads and shoulders better than the other. In fact, everything I read indicates that in terms of wounding they are all comparable and shot placement is the key. There are excellent self defense rounds for all 3 calibers and the argument that a bigger hole is better in someone is valid only when talking about pistol vs shotgun but not these 3 handgun calibers.
I have pruned my handgun collection to 9mm only but that is just me.
I love this argument: "9mm will be more available in a post apocalyptic scenario." GET REAL! If you don't already have it you aren't going to get it in this SHTF scenario that some gun owners think they need to arm themselves to the teeth for.The key word in my post was "available". Sure there will be ton's of 9mm ammo at military depot's. Is it available to you or anyone else other than for an operational military purpose? Are civilians going to line up for their military 9mm handgun ration like the free government cheese that the Reagan administration gave out? NOT!
This thread is about caliber choice, lets stay on topic.
IMHO, 9mm is an ideal choice for a handgun because it is effective as a defensive round and reasonably priced. In order to be effective at using any handgun, one must practice and that can get overly expensive with larger calibers that are no more effective than 9mm.

No, the key word was not "available," it was "post apocalyptic." In A SHTF scenario I agree with you. But in a post apocalyptic world there is no telling what would be available. Don't you watch moviesThe key word in my post was "available". Sure there will be ton's of 9mm ammo at military depot's. Huh? What are you saying? When you shoot in self defense you must shoot to kill..that means a center mass chest shot and/or head shot. In order to defend yourself effectively you need to be proficient with your weapon.Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...Comment

This is EXACTLY why you need to be self sufficient and assume NOTHING will be available other than what you have previously planned for and stored for yourself.
Another reason that 9mm is a great choice...it is reasonably priced. All of these big talkers about the SHTF scenario will crap their pants and hide under the bed like little girls if it actually happened.
I watch plenty of movies and they are full of BS....but if they were real they wouldn't be entertaining...kind of like the bible;-) LOL!Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...Comment

the Glock 23 is a great carry gun... I like the .40 myself, nothing scientific here, just like it.

I have a g17 and 23. I love them both. Either caliber does the job. I shoot the 9mm more because it is cheaper to shoot factory ammo. I carry my g23 more because it is a little smaller handgun. IMHO by one gun now and later on you will more than likely get the other gun. Buy the .40 and get the 9mm conversion - And don't worry about not having supplies in a SHTF scenario. Just look for the driveway displaying Obama bumper stickers. Chances are they aren't armed....

I could not agree more with cmace22. 9mm is a good as it gets for all of the reasons he listed. Particularly if you use a good +P or +P+ bonded core round for self defense. I suspect that anyone who believes the 9mm is not a good self defense round has never seen or heard a shot fired in anger. I feel well armed with my glock 17 or 19 loaded with Speer 9mm LE ammunition. See the attached link for the specific ammunition I am talking about.

About two years ago, I started my search for a handgun and needed to make the same "which caliber" decision. As part of my research, I visited many gun stores, discount stores, and online stores to see what they all had to offer. Without exception, the .40 S&W rounds were the most plentiful -- by far. This fact, along with renting and reading up on ballistics, convinced me to go with the .40 caliber.Comment

Also, see if there is a 9mm conversion barrel for the .40. That way you could have a 9mm when you wanted it in the same frame.im really having a hard time choosing either a 9mm glock or a .40 glock. i have other handguns but mostly in 9mm. what would you people on CG perfer. and reason its so hard choosing is because i am wanting to do my own reloads in 9mm but it wouldnt hurt too bad buying a few boxes of ammo in .40 share your thoughts of what you perfer a 9mm or .40 and why
