Good entry level 1911

"Entry level" would be whatever is in your budget. I would suggest a Kimber Target II, Dan Wesson PM7, Springfield TRP, or a used Wilson/Baer if you could find one. These will be lifetime guns that you could keep forever and not ever have to worry about upgrading much other than preference stuff like grips. Don't chince out on a near $700 purchase when spending just a bit more will get you so much more gun for the money.

SA site says mil spec is a step above GI, it has 3 dot combat sights.

from the RIA im looking at, it has novak sights which looks smoother.

I hear what you are saying but spending $700+ is a little much right now.

I was thinking of getting a Springfield GI. I like the look of the GI 1911a1. I have seen them for around $650 so I would like to spend around that.

Dont bother with the springfield GI.
If you want a GI issued type 1911 go RIA 1911A1. Same gun but can use all colt parts.
If you want the better sights, RIA 1911 tactical. Sights are Novak style and Novaks can be made to fit.

After that Colt 70 series.

I totally agree. IMO, the GI looks cool, but it's missing just enough in today's standards to make it undesirable for me. The extra 100 bucks spent on the Mil Spec will make a big difference and make it an easier base for customization.

Springfield Mil-spec and Loaded are both great choices, you won't be disappointed with them.

Then if you're going to stay with RIA or Springfield, I'd get a RIA Tactical or Target for the price point you're saying. I prefer springfield guns most times but in that budget, you're going to get more for the buck. Used Kimbers are in the price range you're looking at too.

Just out of curiosity, what do you find a GI style to be missing?

Not a bad choice.

Just make sure and budget for good mags - I have been using Wilson 47D's for years, I think they're going for under $30.00 a piece these days.

Ive never ever had a problem with genuine, issued government mags (not the repro's). Cant beat $5 a piece.
