First 1911 poll!

I need to find a new shooting range besides The Gun Room that rapes me to death.

The best range in the area is SacValley (out Jackson Hwy), the least expensive is Mangan (at the top of Exec Airport)

My first was a Springfield Loaded & I'm happy with it.

That's what my first 1911 is going to be, it's on layaway now.

The best all-around 1911 I have is a S&W. They make a beautiful 1911 that runs well with excellent fit and finish. Mine is the older 1911Sc lightweight (now called the 1911PD). It's a joy to shoot.


The "other" 1911 that I like is my Springfield Loaded Champion (4.25" barrel). It's all stainless steel, so it's heavy, but it is also a good shooter. Plus I think it looks snazzy.

Ok i have been studying the 1911 for the past year now to the point im sick of not owning one....
This years tax return should be very nice so im finally going to pick one up. I don't want to go GI or Mil spec, i want it to work 100% right out of the box so i know exactly what a great 1911 is before i try to build one myself. (false logic?) This will also replace my XD for nightstand duty so i want hallowpoint rounds to fire without any FTF/FTE's of any kind, i understand GI and Mill specs would need work for this to work correctly. This is where im lost, i have NO idea of which one to get, or at least which one to buy first!
Im attaching a small poll of guns which i have thought would be good for me, please feel free to add any models that you think would suit me better.
Price range $800-$1,400.

It's always tough to pick out the best 1911's, go with your guts.

I obviously voted for the Springfield Loaded. I just got mine out of gun jail on Friday. I really like the Black SS. Can't wait to throw some grips on it. I can't stop messing it! (dry fire and mag loading) Here's a pic ...

I just got a new sig stainless target last month. Very impressed.

I also looked at dan wessons, but they're hard to get here in cali.

If I could have, I probably would have taken the DW over the sig- though I'm thrilled with the sig.

If you shop used you might be able to find a really nice Les Baer (thunder ranche, etc) or other custom 1911 to fit your budget.

But I really liked my Springer Operator and the TRP that I owned for awhile.

1911forum.com, HERE, i never said it wouldn't work right out of the box with ball ammo, so you're saying i can pick up a Springfield GI put a few hundred rounds of ball ammo thru it, and expect it to run perfectly with all types of HP ammo? Im still going to buy a budget gun, i just want a gun with great quality that i can rely on when i need it most. I could be wrong though, I don't own one!

Update: I went over to River City (sneak peaking inventory) and found an Operator, a Colt XSE, and a very nice brand new Kimber Custom II in black. I don't know why but i really liked the feel of the Kimber.......hmmmmm Gonna have to do some shooting it seems...

If you plan to use it for HD - I would recommend getting one with the built in night site (is a MUST for HD)... less headache to add that additional $100-130 afterwards.

If going with Springfields any of the Loaded models are the best bang for your buck. I love the Champion that I have but sold my 5" loaded for a Target version. Try to find one that is US assembled since it seems to have a better fit/finish than Imbel assembled ones. The Loaded SS goes for about $850 new around here.
