M&ps are good to go, a lot of die hard Glock fans like them quite a bit, which is saying alot as the glock is still the benchmark poly pistol.
All three mfgs you listed are a solid choice, if possible I suggest going to an indoor shooting range and trying to shoot the threee models you are thinking about.
This way you will absolutely know when youve found the one you want.

I'll just C/P my post over from the M&P forums:

http://mp-pistol.com/boards/index.php?showtopic=25202
I posted this on other forums last week so I figure I'd post it here
So I'm still on the hunt for "The Perfect Handgun" for ME After trying 7 Glocks of various calibers, a Sig P226R DAK, USP .40 and a near perfect 1911 that I decided to try a full size M&P 9mm with influence from Apex Tactical. Unless somebody asks me to list the Pro's and Cons of the other platforms I won't get into specifics and will usually compare the 9mm Glocks to the new M&P which I won't have in my hands for another 2 weeks. My recent 9mm Glocks were fantastic firearms with only one malfunction in 15,000 rounds between both of them not caused by me which was a Fail to Feed on my G34 with a worn recoil spring and a weak load. I've always overlooked fitment in my hand since I shot my Glocks better under all conditions than anything else I previously owned but the M&P fits better in my hand and I can drop the mag w/o shifting my grip, but I wonder how I will shoot one. Some of the deterring factors for me with the M&P were:
- The horribly creepy trigger with a non-distinct reset which was the biggest reason
- Teething problems the first couple of years with the MIM strikers breaking from dry firing and are now secretly on their fourth revision made of Stainless Steel.
- Problems with the inconsistent extracting example: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=50894
- Quality Control seem to be hit or miss and there has been plenty of bad barrels that needed to be replaced.
- They seem to rust easier since the melonite process for 'Stainless' Steel stops at Quench Polish vs. Glocks carbon steel slides which are Quench Polish Quench more info here: www.burlingtoneng.com/melonite.html

Now what has changed my mind and makes me actually want to take the plunge? Apex Tactical Specialties ATS has addressed some of the issues that I have with the M&P with its new line of high quality parts to improve the feel of the trigger overall from the initial pull, over travel stop and reset. I'm going with the DCAEK personally since this will be a carry gun and want a 5-5.5# trigger pull. ATS also has an upgraded extractor releasing soon and an upgraded striker down the line so I might as well throw those in too.

So as of right now, this is what I have ordered or soon to be ordered:
-M&P 9mm picking up 04/20/10
- Heinie Sights with Tritium front only www.heinie.com/product_info.php?products_id=169
-Occidental Leather's IWB designed by Tim Thurner of TT Gunleather with only a 10 day turn around www.ttgunleather.com/catalog/i72.html At Post Office
-S&W 2 mag or $50 off promotion which ends in May
-Raven Concealment OWB for M&P and x300 75 days to go
-x300 next week
-Shot Timer eventually
In summary now that I have shot it for awhile, I consider it like an ergonomic Glock that is slightly more complex but easy to master after the upgrades I performed. I shoot my Full Size 4.25" M&P 9mm as well in 1,500 rounds as I did my old Glock 34 that I shot over 12,000 rounds. I am going to disclose that I do have a slight bias to Apex Tactical as I do consider them friends, but their work is extraordinary and anything i say regarding their modifications is without bias.

I choose glock or m&p over XD any day of the week. And yes, I had the XD and just sold it a week ago.

You can't go wrong with an M&P. I did my research and bought one about 6 months after they were first released and never looked back. Don't worry about these people that say the trigger is horrible (it's not) and there were tons on bad striker/barrels/(insert part here) because there weren't. There were a few initial issues like a mag catch failure and those were all addressed. I hear that the APEX kit makes the trigger better but have not tried it - so by all means do you research and consider adding that. But IMHO the pistol is ready to rock out of the box. Rent one or shoot a buddy's first if you can. Good lucxk with your decision and purchase.

The trigger on the M&p9 and m&p49 are not bad at all. It will smooth out over time but the trigger on the m&p45 is horrible (extremely heavy and gritty) but it will smooth out eventually.

IMO it's ready to rock if it has the Sept 2010 upgraded sear block and the newest silver striker minimum. The Apex parts for example make it an easier shooting gun and turn a good gun into a great one

It may smooth out some but it does not fix the overtravel or faint reset.

As an owner of an XD-9, XD-357 and XD-45 the M&P pistols are quickly becoming my favorite polymer pistols.

I haven't fired an M&P 40 so I can't comment on it but I love my M&Ps in 9mm and .45 ACP and yes the triggers do get better over time or you can get the APEX kit on it.

I consider myself a Glock guy only because I own several and I carry a G26 24/7 (when off duty) and I am always active over at GlockTalk.com. That being said, I LOVE my M&P40. I chose the M&P40 over the Gen4 G22 which were on my short list. I passed on the XDm40 only because it had some deal breaker features for me personally but its a great gun regardless of what I think.

Here is my M&P review if you are interested in my slant on it?

My wife sold her XD .45 Tactical to buy her M&P .40. She loves the M&P. It is a nice gun. I like shooting it as well. Not as much as I like my P226R or 1911, but enough that I am considering getting a M&P 9mm or .45.
