Plus it's GPS, good way to prove your argument with a LEO who says your too close to said school.
Would you post the app info, please?

There are some concerns: where does it get its data? How does one know the list of schools is complete? How does it map the boundaries of the school property (and therefore, how does it lay out the outline at 1000'?)

While it might be useful to deflect a street officer, it's DAs you have to worry about. Anything that deflects an arrest is probably a Good Thing.

Sure. Its called Phantom Alert. You can change the parameters to set distance. It uses GPS and shows up like blip radar on your screen. It will also do speed traps, red light cameras, dui checkpoint, etc...tons of stuff. It can even show live traffic cameras in your area.

OK. Just looked at my neighborhood on their web site, http://www.phantomalert.com/View+Cam...location=94521

They accurately report 'school zones', as in the places where the crosswalks are yellow.

But there's no indication that anyone has mapped the 1000' zones based on the school campus boundaries.

If I were you, until/unless you can find that level of detail in their mapping, I would not rely on that app to keep you out of UOC trouble in school zones.

For an example, if they are using the street address of the schools on my street, setting the app for a 1200' notification won't help - the actual school property extends over 1200 feet east of the address - the warning would have to be at least 2200 feet. Putting in some safety factors, I think you would wind up with so much area the app would warn about that you would get pretty frustrated.

In THEORY, what about your walk form the parking lot to the range? Does it matter that the bag is not locked?

Alternatively, lock the pistols themselves in their original box, and put the boxes int he range bag.

the walk from car to range is unloaded carry at that point, i think. the locking part only applies to inside an automobile during transport. my understanding is that the intent was to curb road rage incidents with a gun in arms reach of a driver...

but from the descriptions of people who clearly just box and lock their unloaded guns in the front seat... lol?

              Yes, it matters.

The 'in the car' part is 12026.1. The 'not in the car' part is 12026.2, so includes parking lot to lanes.

That's why a distinct locking handgun case is probably a better idea than simply relying on your trunk -- but you could open carry, in that circumstance, presuming the range allowed it.

Thanks for that info, Librarian. That makes it a bit more clear:

                California Penal Code 12026.2:
                (a) Section 12025 does not apply to, or affect, any of the
                following:
                ...
                (9) The transportation of a firearm by a person when going
directly to, or coming directly from, a target range, which holds a
regulatory or business license, for the purposes of practicing
shooting at targets with that firearm at that target range.
Makes a lot more sense in that context.

ive always had some question about this...

so if your handgun is in, lets just say a paper bag for what ever reason, or an unlocked range bag, W/E, inside your (closed and locked) trunk, your trunk can only be accessed from the main trunk door outside of the car. this to my knowledge is 100% legal.

now you go to the grocery store, buy a few things, open your trunk to put your bags in... the handgun is now concealed and not in a locked container and you are violating a law correct?

or what if you go out to BLM or somewhere that its legal to shoot, your gun IS in a locked container and you are about to start shooting. so you unlock your container to get your gun out. between the time that your container is unlocked and your gun is out of the case, you have a concealed weapon????

Have you ever read the story of Achilles and the tortoise? I rather like the Carroll version.

In Zeno's original, the extra-argument fact that, at some point, Achilles cannot perform a physical act small enough to avoid passing the tortoise invalidates the problem as something one needs to be concerned over.

So, in answer to your question, yes, those would be moments when "concealed but not-locked" is the state of the concealable weapon, thus at those times not qualifying for the exception to 12025 created by 12026.1.

I leave the connection between Zeno and handguns in the trunk for the reader.

Now, my conclusion does require that all actors subject their behaviors and observations to logic. We already know that that is not a conclusion one may assume from those charged with enforcing California gun laws.

Ok, how about a couple handguns, unloaded and unlocked in a duffle bag exposed in the bed of a pickup truck?

Concealed unlocked violates PC 12025 unless the person transporting/possessing has CCW or the truck is in the person's garage or otherwise on that person's private property, or on another's private property with permission.

so would driving around with the combo preset to the "unlocked" position be illegal? i would presume yes. just curious.

why i ask... i've seen some of those nanovaults shown that have the biometric/palm sensor on them... would those violate the law in that they are one-step unlockable?

sorry to keep hounding this thread with yet more scenarios, but this entire dealio really is baffling at times. thanks in advance.

Yep, it's always locked for transport, but I only keep one number off on one of the dials. I can open it and load it in seconds. Nanovaults are steel, light, easy to transport, can take with you, and cost about $25.00
