Is the trunk a locked container?

I just got the Midway USA range bag and I love it. But there is really no way to lock the bag. Is having my pistols in it and having the bag in my trunk good enough for transport or should I still use my plastic lockable cases and then just transfer the guns to the range bag when I arrive? Thanks.

Yes, the trunk is a locked container for this purpose/situation. Not to be a broken record, be sure the weapons are unloaded and a magazine, empty or not, is not inserted in the well.

Alright. Good to know. Thanks for the clarification. So locked box is really only needed if handgun is in the main part of the car and accessible by someone in the car correct?

Just found this page that confirms the trunk is ok. Thanks again.

I also just bought the MidwayUSA range bag (nice and inexpensive) can ammo and the gun be put together in the bag and leave in the trunk locked? or ammo box has to be in the car and gun in the trunk, or vise versa? thanks.

This all depends on the car ie VW's Audi with a latch where you could flip down the rear seat and be able to gain access from inside don't count. Honda's where you actually have to stick a key in a key hole from inside to flip the rear seat is gtg. IANAL so verify my info yourself.

Just put everything in the bag and lock the zippers of the compartment holding the pistols. You could even have it sitting in the front seat next to you if you like. That's not a good idea just in case you have a LEO contact and they ask what's in the bag. It's better to avoid that situation if possible.

yeah, I'm talking about the standard sedan with the trunk lid, which of course have no access from the interior. Heck, I'm driving a truck with the bed cover and lock The bag I got has no way to put lock on it, but I have the Nano lock box which I kept the gun inside. So, I guess I can put them all in the bag, then leave it in the trunk, right? thx!

If the car has fold down seats without a key then it has to be locked. Will cable locks on the individual guns be sufficient?

Locked Case only. Either a locked trunk or a locked case anywhere in the car.

                        Naturally, unloaded.

If a Range Bag cannot be locked it's not a good enough range bag for my money.

I use a leatherette briefcase from Staples ($29). Combo lock on each side..works well and fits into the trunk or frontseat if desired.

You can stick about 4 brief cases worth of stuff in a large Midway bag and lock the zippers together with mini Master key locks. It locks just fine. Just doesn't come with locks. Although its made from nylon so a knife would open it easily.

So, how do you defend yourself with your pistol locked in the trunk?

Also, locks are to keep honest people honest. Well and to appease California law. It does not matter how well your bag or briefcase locks. If your bag is stolen your guns are gone.
