    Handgun safe - electronic

I have been searching and am not satisfied with my findings. All the small / single handgun safes are pricey..... I have heard that I could find one for $60ish but the ones I have seen have all been way more.

    Any recommendations?

I bought a DAC brand safe from Socal guns here in san diego. It was a GREAT safe for about $60.00

Gave it to my dad, and now that I'm picking up a XD9 tactical, I went to look for another one. They've got the same one or very similar for like $100.00.

haha! Oh well, at least my dad has an awesome safe!

I agree, though. Gunvault has some great products, but their 1 or 2 gun safes are outragous in their pricing. I think Discount gun had one of their smaller models for like $200.00. (And Discount usually has the best price in SD county)

I spent part of today looking all over the Interweb for just the right electronic gun lock box. (I dare not call them a "safe".) The Gunvaults are nice, especially the biometric locks but they are indeed too expensive.

I found the Homak line of electronic access boxes. They seem pretty good and the prices are much less than Gunvault. There are deficiencies such as the non-ergonomic unlock/combination keys and the aperture of the Homaks are a bit small so you don't get full clearance relative the internal space. It seems you kind of have to angle the gun in and out. In any event, I think they're worth a look.

Does anyone know if Gunvault has solved or debunked the supposed easy defeat issue with the locking mechanism? I don't want to give a secret away but I think anyone considering a Gunvault should be aware of the supposed issue.

I just found this on Midway USA for $80, thanks to CALATRAVA bringing up DAC brand.

$40 approximately at Harbor Freight. None of the little safes will withstand a serious attempt to pry or cut them open but they stop the curious visitor or the casual thief out for a fast grab. It's easy enough to drill holes in it to mount it to something. I would never trust anything electronic to work when I needed it. Leaving it open with a handgun ready in it at night by the bed and then locking it in the morning is one way to go. It's also handy to bolt onto the top of a bigger safe so you don't have to open the big one every time.

You might want to check Turners. This week's ad (expires on 11/25) has two safes, one for 50 and one for 60.

I have two of these, one for about 5 years. Batteries last well over a year, and you open with the key to replace them.

I've got two of the DAC sport safes, His & Hers. The battery compartment is a bit flimsy. It does not come with an external power supply (easily solved by Ebay). I had a lot of problems with one of them when attempting to insert the external power supply plug and had to replace the connector on the box, and it wasn't a lot of fun.

The shelf is plastic. They state you can hold two guns, I would say you can't. I have an XD in mine, the wife has a snub nose S&W in hers. I cut down the plastic shelves so I was not hitting into it while grabbing the pistol. I put magazines/speed loaders on the plastic shelf.

I'd probably go with DAC again, I am willing to live with the limitation/problems I noted. I got two of them for about the same price as a single Gun Vault.

Yes, that problem was resolved long ago.

                        I don't think so.

                          Paul,

How many pistols can you place in one safe?

Just pistols, 6 to 8. Right now I have a mid size tommys gun pack with my CZ75bd, holster and mags on the top shelf, and two snubs, and two PA 63s, one in its Euro holster, on the bottom. Also a couple long gun bolts and an envelope with passports and a few other docs. It is full.

I'd like to confirm the same deficiencies and also the fact that even so, I'd buy the brand again. You describe them very well! I did the same thing with my shelf.

What was important to me that after about 2 years and many cycles of opening/closing (about 4-500, I'd say, maybe more)I never once had any type of failure/flub with the mechanism.
