I have revolvers by both Ruger and S&W. Both make good revolvers and with minimal care either will last your lifetime and probably your children and grand-children. IMO, Smiths are better enough that they are worth the extra 30% in price.

I agree with this 100%.
But, if you just can't swing the Smith the Security Six is still an awesome choice. It looks great, tough as nails, and has the cool discontinued and old factor.
I think I'm the one guy on Earth that really dislikes the GP100, but love my security six.

I only own revolvers in .22LR, but not in centerfire rounds due to caliber and ammo choices (I am narrowing down to .22LR, 9mm and .45ACP). However, if I want a good centerfire revolver that gives me a lot of bang for the money, I choose the Ruger revolvers: affordable, reliable and built like a tank. I love Smith revolvers (I have a six-shooter SS 617), but those are quite pricier. Ruger revolvers don't have the refinement of S&W, but they are tougher workhorses (tough as nails). I mentioned in another post that a reputable gunsmith replied to me that he's seen S&W 686's blown out by hot-loaded ammo, but has not seen a Ruger GP100 blown out by hot-loaded ammo.
To me, comparing S&W revolvers with Ruger revolvers is like comparing a SUV with a hardbody pickup truck: A SUV is tough, but it is still refined and built to be mainly a passenger vehicle while the hardbody pickup truck is what you actually ride hard and for doing a lot of tough and rough work. They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

You're one of two. I don't care for the GP100 either. I have a Security Six I bought circa 1973 that is still one of my favorite guns. If Ruger ever starts making them again I'll be in line to buy a another one. Or maybe two.Politicians and criminals are moral twins separated only by legal fiction.Comment

I would get a Dan wesson in 357 maximum that way you can shoot 38 special, 357 magnum and 357 maximum. That or a s&w 610 so you can shoot 40s&w or 10 mm. A couple of pics for you

I wanted to get back to say thanks again for all the advice the membership has given me.
I decided and went with the S&W 686Plus Stainless. Bought it new. The gun shop owner gave me the 686Plus for the price of the regular 686 because I spent cash...seemed like a decent deal to me.
Anyway, thanks again and I'm lovin' my new S&W.Comment

Definitely go with 357 unless theres a reason why you need a smaller gun. Can't go wrong with Ruger or S&W (GP100 and S&W 686 are the go-to wheelguns for modern purchasers) no matter what others say. General consensus is: Ruger will be your best bang for your buck, possibly more durable, definitely more rugged. S&W is more refined. I thought my stock GP100 trigger was really good (it actually is, due to plenty of break-in time spent), but that changed when I tried out a stock S&W trigger. Just the feeling is different that no amount of break-in wear will change the Ruger's trigger to S&W's. A more sophisticated trigger job on the other hand (one that requires more than simply polishing and changing weight of springs), is a whole different story.
EDIT: shoot, didn't even see your update. Congrats. I recently moved on to an S&W as well after finding a 627 8-shot 5" Performance Center for $750.Last edited by gorenut; 12-20-2010, 10:17 PM.Comment

I'm kind of a revolver nut myself, and out of all of my revolvers (well, the revolvers in the family) the favorite is the Ruger SP-101. The qualification in the parens is because said SP-101 is now my wife's full-time carry piece. Darn nice gun. I'd love to get another, but I've got way too many wheel guns already. The CalGunner formerly known as 'OrovilleTim' before defecting to a free state and becoming an 07/02.
