Ruger questions:

I am considering a Ruger SR9 or P95 semi auto pistol. Why? Because I have condense my firearms limited to only American companies. I know there are other 9mm semi-auto American companies out there, but Ruger seems to be an outcast.

I would like suggestions and opinions from Ruger owners "past or present",
If you never owned or shot a Ruger semi-auto pistol, please don't response.

Questions:

* What year was the P95 release?
* Would you or have you taken your Ruger pistol and ran it on a competition course such as IPSC?
* How much do you like your pistol and would you recommend it?
* Can you compare it to other type of 9mm pistols?
* How reliable is it?
* What are the main problems to these pistols?
* Pros and Cons?
* Accuracy?

Current owner of a p95. Pro's low cost, rugged, nice SA, dependable as all get out, shoots well. Con's a little chunky, lots of creep in trigger. All in all a good and dependable gun. You'll be very happy with it.

I own a P89 which is similar to a P95 (1995 model) except for P95's rail by the trigger guard front. Just started shooting it again after 17 years. It's very accurate (for an occasional shooter like me). I was thinking of selling the gun but went against it after I shot it for the first time again in 17 years. It reminded me of it's accuracy. My wife, is very petit but she can shoot it pretty well using federal ammo's from walmart. Go for it, you won't regret it. I think Ruger is under rated.

I have a Ruger P-85 in 9mm it is big and clunky. will eat any type of ammo I feed it. She goes bang every time the trigger is pulled.

I have a P89 and an SR9. Both are extremely reliable, zero malfunctions with either to date. The triggers aren't the best in the world, but they work. Plenty accurate. They don't feel quite as refined as some of their competitors, but the Ruger semi-autos are definitely quality guns. I would recommend.

Have a P90 (.45 ACP) a P89 (9mm). Have 5 Berettas (92's/96's and a Cougar).

Keep in mind - I'm a Beretta fan, but bought the P90 on a whim. And am a DA/SA fan, so to get a .45 in DA/SA only seemed natural.

1. Would rate them equal in reliability / durability (have over 4k in one 92, and over 1k on the P90). No problems either gun.

2. Ruger rates way ahead in customer support. (Try calling Ruger sometime - you will not believe it).

3. Have taken the 92 on two 'Tactical handgun' classes, would have taken the P90, cept for the price of ammo. Sorry, not in IDPA, but plan to be...

4. The accuracy of my P90 astounds me. I shoot better with it than any other pistol I own. Has stainless barrel, decent trigger, and just seems to stay on target for follow on shots. Yes I may shoot better with a Wilson Tactiical I rent often, but it costs over $2,000!! The P90 was like $450 (NEW)??

5. P89 - jury is still out, I bought it used, and have barely shot it... I got it at a very attractive, low price. Built like a tank like the P90.

6. Cons of the P series - lack of aftermarket stuff. Everybody and their dog has parts and grips for a Beretta 92. Not so with the Ruger. Everyone seems to hate the look of the Ruger, cept me. But I would like to get better looking grips (they grip fine, just look like a piece of construction equipment... ). Another con is that they are the Rodney Dangerfield of guns - they get no respect, but who cares? One small con - Ruger mags are expensive (compared to Beretta for example).

7. Pros of the P series - not much to clean, not much to modify, easy to tear down, built like a tank. And the controls are truely ambidextrious, large and easy to manipulate.

8. Beretta 92FS is a nice sweet AMERICAN gun!!

I can't keep my eyes off the OD green SR9. But since the P95 can take pre-caps, I might have to ask my cousin if he still have his old P89.

I agree with everyone so far, my only gripe is that Ruger did such a good job keeping the mags the same for their 9mm's (including the PC-9) up until the SR-9, I think its ridiculous that they have a unique mag just for the SR-9 series. If it wasn't for that, well, oh well.

the way the grip was designed, they needed a different mag design. Since the grip was one of the main design points of the SR9, they really didnt have much of a choice.

I like my P89. Have shot, and almost bought a P95. It worked well. Would like to try the SR9, havent done that yet.

My last SR-9. Ghost 3.5 reset, modified striker spring, polished internals. Just sold it, and already miss it badly. I made a mistake, but I am going for the SR40 when it becomes DOJ approved, any day now. You like green, well here you go.

Rugers are good.....but....

Beretta USA, HK USA, FN USA, SIG SAUER, Glock USA, etc are all considered "American" companies under the Buy America Act provisions, no matter where their products are actually made. How HK and SIG got the DHS contract in 2004, and Glock the FBI, DEA, USMS afterwards, and the ATF contract this year.

I don't have any at the moment but I have had a red-hawk and a Super black-hawk and wish I still had them... I think Ruger is way under estimated for the quality...

Ive owned four rugers. P85 P345 P90 and Ruger 22 rifle. The only one I kept over time was the P85 and that was ONLY because I simply did not shoot the others much at all so I am of the school of if I dont use it im gonna get rid of it. There was NOTHING ever wrong with the guns. to answer your questions in bold

Little heavier bulkier but more reliable IMO than others. My P85 has finally after 20 some odd years been sent to the factory and i got it back basically as a BNIB gun all internals swaped and everything reblued. GREAT customer service

VERY it has never given me a problem. Reason it ewas sent in was for a old recall and simply after 20 years things wear out but they fixed it all.

Dont know but Ruger will fix them

People look down on Rugers cause they are not HK, SIG, Beretta, or whatever new high speed low drag tacticool pistol. Factory grips are ok but if you have the option of adding a set of Hogue grips youll be shocked how much more comfortable it is
* Accuracy?
Ive outshot friends who had so called better quality guns. People like to demean a gun if the gun is as good as their 800$ piece but only cost 400 IMO
