Easy fix: flip the gun over to the 'good' side next time you take a glamor shot, erase your original post.

    Then live and learn.

The next time someone asks to look at it and you start to get embarrassed just hand it to them and say "please don't ask to borrow or use it -- you can see what happened the last time some idiot tried to take it apart". And just leave it at that.

Cold blue will darken it.. but I agree... it quickly wears off... and nothing short of refinishing it will make it go away.

Gee your front strap looks like its got wear marks too.. That gun looks horrible... I'll give you $500 for it..

Seriously shoot the heck out of it and don't worry IT's going to get a lot worse.. or better depending on your perspective.. Keep her oiled up and she will run just fine. Yes I mean the COLT.. :P

Just buy another gun. That gun just became your "beater."

I also agree with the "guns get used and scratched, don't worry about ." school of thought.

The scratch is not supposed to be by the trigger.

Everyone knows it is supposed to be on the slide!

                      HAhahahaha! What a moroon!

Not really any good way to hide it, however if it really bugs you and you have any other work you want done on the pistol (sights, front strap checkerring, new grip safety, etc)you should do it and then have the pistol refinished. Black-t is a nice finish that wears pretty well and is reasonably priced (under 200 last time I checked), and there are many other finishes available from different vendors, like Robar.

More important is how to not do it again.

When reassembling the slide to the frame slide it on till the hole in the barrel link is visible through the slide stop hole (make sure the pistol is in its normal upright position so the barrel link hangs down, a little wiggling on the spring will make sure the link is hanging straight down vertically).

Then insert the slide stop through the frame and link and have it point straight down into the trigger guard in front of the trigger. While controlling the slide stop, position the slide so that the takedown notch is in the proper position. Now, with the pistol laying on its right side, lift up, up, up on the slide stop till it's well clear of the frame while you rotate it, but still engaged through the link and the frame. The slide stop should be slightly out from detent pin and just slightly below it. Push in and up at the same time with both thumbs on the slide stop and the slide stop will cam the detent pin out of the way as it fully seats and no scratch and no tools needed.
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

I never understand how people make the "idiot mark" on their 1911's. Your bet is if you really want it gone is to refinish. Although i agree with another poster that the grip safety is by far a worse offense than that scratch.

normally I just buy another one, I do not think you can have to many, after a while you stop making those idiot marks and just buy extras preemptively
