    CA approved gun safe?

    Buddy bought a gun from me. He said he had a safe, then he was handed a paper to see if it qualified. He went home and looked it up, it says DOJ CA Approved. But, he doesn't see where it says UL approved? He has a Gun Vault

    Then it got me thinking, is mine? I have a HOMAK (first one)

    I don't know about UL approval, but I do know they quit giving the trigger lock purchase exemption for having a safe when you buy a handgun. Only works with a long gun now.

      There's a difference between a "safe" and a "CA approved firearm safety device" I'm no expert, but what you're talking about may be a DOJ safety device, but not technically UL listed Residential Security Container.

        Read all about it at the DOJ web site: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/fsdcertlist.php

        Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

          That's what I thought, but every time I've bought a handgun this year I've been told the safe exemption was only valid for purchasing a long gun. Maybe the high school students manning the counters at my local shop are out of the loop.

            The law about having a cable lock for a handgun is Federal, not state.

              yes, they are....

              1.Is listed as an Underwriters Laboratories Residential Security Container;
              2.Is able to fully contain firearms;
              3.Provides for the secure storage of firearms.
              if you find a safe or gun cabinet that doesn't meet the bold requirements, i'd like to here about it.....this is basically the big loop hole so that you can buy things like Stack-on safes and save some money rather than dropping a few hundred or thousand on a big safe.

              Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

                Found it:

                922
                (z) Secure Gun Storage or Safety Device.—
                (1) In general.— Except as provided under paragraph (2), it shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer to sell, deliver, or transfer any handgun to any person other than any person licensed under this chapter, unless the transferee is provided with a secure gun storage or safety device (as defined in section 921 (a)(34)) for that handgun
                921

                (34) The term "secure gun storage or safety device" means -

                (A) a device that, when installed on a firearm, is designed to
                prevent the firearm from being operated without first
                deactivating the device;

                (B) a device incorporated into the design of the firearm that
                is designed to prevent the operation of the firearm by anyone not
                having access to the device; or

                (C) a safe, gun safe, gun case, lock box, or other device that
                is designed to be or can be used to store a firearm and that is
                designed to be unlocked only by means of a key, a combination, or
                other similar means.
                Sounds like a Taurus or SW, etc revolver with an integrated lock doesn't need a cable lock.

                  Federal law says a lock must go with every handgun. It may come with the gun...or it must be "provided"...some FFL's will give you one...some will offer one for sale...or you can go buy your own. BUT...a lock must go with the gun...so it renders the gun safe affadavit useless in the case of handguns.

                  Integrated locks are acceptable for me...but that doesn't mean there aren't others who would still insist you purchase a cable lock.

                    If and only if BATFE comes out with a stated way to document that as complying with 18 USC 922 (z). They haven't managed to do that with something as obvious as a safe yet ...

                    And it isn't necessarily a 'cable lock' - any approved-by-CA lock (because CA insists no others can be sold in CA) for that handgun works.

                      Gotcha!

                      I always wondered why there were two options available on the affidavit.
                      One option is apparently for a "listed" safe, with the other option an affirmation that your safe qualifies "by feature".
