    Settle this...

I know it's probably not that big of a deal, but when I went to demonstrate the safe handling of the handgun I was purchasing, (keeping firearm pointed in safe direction and finger off trigger) I:

    1)removed the magazine
    2)locked the slide back
3)inspected the chamber, confirming it was clear
4)loaded a dummy round into magazine
    5)inserted magazine
    6)released slide
    7)removed magazine
8)visually inspected chamber to reveal round
9)locked slide back to eject round
    10)released slide
    11)applied safety

Now the worker that was watching me informed me that I did everything correctly except steps 7),8),9). He claimed the correct order was steps 1-6, 9, 8, 7, 10. He said that's the only thing I did wrong. Was he right?
Again, I know it's not too big of a deal, but just wanted to clear things up.

DOJ does not have a set of rules on how it should be run. It's up to each individual test administrator to judge how "SAFE" you were.

Let's review the 3 NRA rules of safe gun handling.

    1) Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
    2) Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
    3) Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to shoot

Seems like you followed the rules.

    Let's apply the cooper rules

    1) All guns are always loaded
    2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy
    3) Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target
    4) Be sure of your target

Again, seems like you followed the rules.

Sounded like you demonstrated safe handling to me. I bought a gun a few months ago and they didn't even ask me to demonstrate safe handling. Maybe I did it when he handed it to me and (as I was always taught) made sure it was clear.

I had the safe handling demonstrated for me by gun store employee when I got my last handgun... Explain that

If you did those exact steps in that order, you would have gotten an A+ from me. That is the process I try to show people.

You did good, don't worry about it.

i don't know about you but, i was always taught to remove the magazine first before unloading the chamber, so as to not load another round if there is one in the mag. so you did it correctly in my book.

Why would he tell you to rack the slide on a loaded gun, with a mag inserted, to unload it?

The whole point is to demonstrate how to load and unload a gun, right? If you're racking the slide prior to dropping the mag, and there's more than one round in the mag...congratulations, you just chambered a new round and demonstrated you know how to grab at various things that move on the gun.

Just get a CCW. Then you don't have to do the demonstration.

When i do them for single action revolvers I like to check the revolver cylinders by rolling it across my arm.

Great solution there, except for the fact that he's in Orange County. Hutchins? Yea, ain't going to happen.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I knew I was a safe firearms handler.

I would if I had a good enough reason for one. Do you think 'self preservation' would suffice?
