If money is a problem, I agree with others that you should be looking at a 9mm instead of a .40 simply because 9mm ammo costs less. 9mm is plenty potent for self defense as well.

When Sigma's first came out they were junk. But it seems over time they have eliminated most of the problems. But supposedly it has a horrible trigger that you might want to address if you get one.

Another inexpensive option might be the Ruger SR9. I believe it's in the same price range as the Sigma and people seem to like it.

I haven't shot either one so I can only tell you what I've read.
"Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. Show me an old liberal and I'll show you a man without a brain." - Sir Winston Churchill

"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!" - Senator Barry Goldwater

I own a Sigma 9mm. Bought it last year. I can tell you the trigger isn't a problem for me. With practice, rounds, and dry fire now and then the trigger will loosen up. It's accurate and reliable. K1Dude is correct. Ammo is priced much better than the 40 Cal. Walmart has 9mm 250 rounds for $52 plus tax. Go with the SW9VE. Good luck!!! Keep us posted.
