I'd say that the more you know, the more you know what you need to carry... often, it's less.

When I was an active medic, many times all I'd have on me is a couple pairs of gloves, my steth, my shears. I'd have whatever else I'd need nearby. Sometimes all I'd have is a pack on that holds just the stuff I'd need to let me work through the first minute or so of the evaluation and by then, the rest of what I'd need would be prepped and ready to go.

Knowledge and experience constantly had me re-evaluating my gear.
