my natural reaction would to have my girl call 911, and i will pick up my 12gauge shotgun and yell out the door.... "I am armed, and if you dont leave, i will shoot!" as loud as i can and pump my shotty so they know i mean business.....

hopefully that will change their mind....

I skipped right to the end to give my true insight before reading the other posts. Open pistol case. Give wife the Glock 17. If I don't have time, I grab the 357 which is next to the glock. If I have 15 seconds, I open safe and take out my 12 gauge loaded with 00 low recoil and i ounce slugs low recoil. I leave wife in bedroom with baby and proceed to a position from which I can fire and be fired upon without putting the wife and baby at risk. Should I go down, the wife knows how to handle that Glock very well...

Hopefully Id be awakened before they actually got in.If that is the case then id hurry down the hallway and position myself at the corner of the hallway to where I can just peek out with my shotgun and then id wait for them to bust through and then when they busted through id tellem to get down or i'll f*ckin blow brains out,if they came closer to me id pull the trigger.If they came any closer id take that as they were trying to cause harm to me.

you should include some pj pants in your plan, for the sake of the neighbors and the media cameras.

Think about some sandals or light shoes next to the bed you can slip your feet into quickly if you need to, or have the opportunity to, escape to the outside.

Barricading is one leg of a plan. But you need to think through plan B and maybe even plan C ahead of time.

And I don't have to give my wife a pistol while I make for the shotgun. She has her own handgun and knows to cover while I move, and vice versa.

This was discussed in an earlier thread and the responses are consistent. I would do as most people have planned. Wife and big boy Rottweiler bunker down master bath, she calls 911, I hold the door from behind the bed. We have a solid core bedroom door and I keep a Master door bar to secure the door. Those things are great. It's simile physics and effectively prevents door kicks. Know your nearest cross street, the position of your house on the block, have an idea ahead of time why you are going to say to dispatch to be most clear, and try stick to the relevant details. I spent some time in a 911 dispatch center in Long Beach many years ago. The calls coming in were insane, as in insane people.

Two notes:

I am a big believer in layering security so physical barriers such as locked gates are good, deterrents like motion sensor lights a necessity, and an alarm system to alert you of a potential intruder. I wouldn't cheap out on this and only get the basic 1 door and 3 windows kind of package. I got every door and window put on sensor. We also have remote control panic alarms. Of course set the alarm! It amazes me how many people have alarm systems and don't arm them. It's a good early warning and the signs/stickers are a deterrent in themselves.

911 from cell phones in California almost always go to CHP dispatch. Unless you live on the number 2 lane of the freeway, CHP won't help you. Find out if that is true in your area. Be prepared to advise their dispatch what department you need for your area and ask to be put through immediately. It's a waste of time to explain to them what's going on and then possibly have to repeat it to another dispatcher. Of course calling directly to the dispatch of the agency in your area would best but not always possible.

I would lock my wife in the closet and have her call 911. Take my 9mm and make sure that he/she hears my slide rack back, turn on my surefire 170 lumens light to blind the hell out and tell him that my life and family is being threated and i have the right to blow your *****brains out. My bedroom is upstairs, so I have the higher ground advantage.

I'm not very creative so:

1. Retreat with family to the designated safe room.
2. Lock the door.
3. Call 911 on the cell phone
4. Tell the police the location of the safe room from the outside in unambiguous terms. IE something like southeast corner of the house
5. Ask that the police to identify themselves and I will pass them a key ring with the house and the safe room door keys. (I have a solar powered motion activated light outside the window to help tell friend from foe.)
6. Emphasize that the intruders may still be in the house and that I am armed. Request the police knock and announce at the safe room door before unlocking it.
7. Leave the phone off hook until the police have cleared the house.

All 3 bedroom doors in my house are at the end of the hallway. The hallway has access from the living room and kitchen. Only the master bedroom has a lock on it.
I can cover all 3 bedrooms and have a safe backdrop from outside of my room. In fact, the doorway of my daughter's room across the hallway offers the best tactical advantage. I keep a Tac light next to the gun. If I can get everybody inside the master bedroom, we can barricade. Until that happens, I have to at least step into or across the hallway.
I choose a revolver because I do not need to make any noise chambering the round. I agree with keeping silent until you know exactly what the threat is.
The dog sleeps in the laundry room off the kitchen and would hopefully let us know someone is trying to enter. Unfortunately, my 24 year-old son keeps late hours (food server) and often comes home after we are all asleep. This makes us all too comfortable with late night entry. Again, I hope we now the difference when it matters.

Stay in the room and have the girlfriend call 911. Since you are a police officer they should be there extra quick. Use your SWAT experience to clear the home if there are others staying with you.

This past month the wife and I have been over this several times and have experienced it too, unfortunately.

Whether or not the kids are home, the wife gets the phone, ready to dial 911. Also stays put in the bedroom and goes to master closet to hide/grab a shotgun/.357 if necessary. I grab the flashlight on the nightstand as well as the .357/shotgun and peek out the bedroom door (or go directly to the adjacent rooms where the kids are if they are home). I bring kids to mama if they are home and we basically hunker down. Fortunately for us, our hallway makes for a good funnel and I can see who is approaching it due to a huge cutout in the wall (hard to describe my home design).

A few weeks ago, a person was trying to kick down my front door in broad daylight (turns out he was a physco disgruntled worker but that's a different topic). Anyway, the kids WERE home, so I threw the kids in a room, grabbed my 12 gauge and immediately greeted the guy at my door. No shots fired as racking the shotgun in front of his face and opening one of the doors pretty much ended it all. Called cops and the rest was taken care of.

Lot of commentary on this subject. In my CCW training, I was told to call 911 as fast as possible and then NOT hang up but to put the phone on speaker. Your house or not, your legal position will be much better if you tell the intruder that you have called the police and then warn him that you will shoot if he proceeds. With your phone on speaker and 911 recording the call, you will then have a strong legal position should you actually have to use your gun.
