I used to be skeptical about these as HD weapons so I wrote to Winchester, Federal and Remington asking how some of their 357 offerings fared in the Marlin 1894. Only Federal wrote back and said they did test the 158 gr Hydrashock in longer barrels and it expanded reliably and had did not fragment even at the 1800 to 1900 fps velocities a lever carbine will generate.

The last thing I ever want to do is have to kill someone in my own home. I'd rather have him flee into the night with his shorts full. Happier ending and a more amusing tale. If I hear voices or noises inside I'll give them a chance to leave. But if they elect to escalate the situation by aggression, I want to be the one standing when police arrive.
    Ditto.

If we lived in a civilized society, the main concern of the justice system would be keeping the peace. Should that peace be broken, the police would show up to make sure the right person got shot. However that is not the state of the modern world. Better to let the goblin escape than put my family through the crap the legal system keeps in store for decent people forced to extremes by that system's own failures.
Politicians and criminals are moral twins separated only by legal fiction.

      Home Defense

Well this stays by my night stand along with a Taser X-26.
In the bathroom, I keep a Walther .32, as it's always good to keep a little something there because you never know when you may get an unwanted person breaking in while you're in the shower.

I'm on the way to get a Glock 19 and possibly a 26 as well. but not too sure on the 26.

Brand New SureFire X300...... 200.00 obo

        Shower Carry is a MUST.

            Which part of Corona?

I started off with a shotgun for HD and a couple years later I ended up with everything but. I'm not saying a shotgun isn't good for HD, but as you can already decipher, based on some of the responses you've gotten, everyone will have a differing opinion on what works best.

Used to keep one of my 1911s on the nightstand but lately it's been my P30S .40 with TLR2 since none of my 1911s have rails and I decided I wanted a light on my nightstand gun. I also usually keep my 870 with a full tube of 00 under the bed and it's got a light/laser combo on it as well. On the few occasions I've had to investigate a sound in the middle of the night, the handgun has been my go-to. I just don't feel totally comfortable maneuvering a shotgun around corners inside the house even though it's an 18 incher. I might grab it if I had to investigate a sound in the backyard though. I also like to keep another handgun near the front door in case trouble comes a'knockin, so to speak.

Its a little cumbersome to open doors with a shotgun but with a handgun it makes the task easier and safer because you have a free hand. Also when turning corners, you can keep the weapon close to the body to prevent the BG from disarming you. With a shotgun you got that long barrel which becomes a liability in cinfined places. Shotguns are good if you plan on holing up in one spot but of you need to move around I would choose the handgun.

The 223 IMHO has too much flash and too loud to be used indoors and has the same issues as using the shotgun.

My personal choice is the Glock G17 with 147grn HP with Trijicon Night Sights and a SureFire Flashlight.
+1 on this - I have the same set up except I went with an XD40. My flashlight is an E2D Led Defender. The flashlight has a serrated strike bezel that can also be used for self defense.

Does anybody use a shotgun as a HD weapon or Do you guys think I'm fine with just a few firearms placed around the house, and of course one on the nightstand ???

Guns can be like cars, or food. If you ask someone what the best family car is, you'll get all kinds of answers. If you ask someone what is the best topping on a pizza, you'll get all kinds of answers.

The best answer is what fits you and your wife best. Go to some gun stores, go to a range and shoot different stuff. See what feels right. For us, we have a 12ga shotgun with 00 buck. That has an LED light mounted on the feed tube. This is so if the bad guy turns off the power to the house, I can still see him. And, the light is so bright, it can be temporarily blinding. I keep the gun loaded, no shells in the chamber. Why? If a time comes where I have to use it, one pump tells the bad guy, "Get out of my house. I will use this."

For our 15th anniversary, my wife thought she was getting a nice piece of jewelry. She did. I got her a Glock 23 with night sights. It is a powerful gun, and I keep 2 magazines of Golden Saber rounds at the ready. Handguns can do a lot of damage, too, but takes a good steady hand to hit your threat.

I keep the guns hidden because we have 2 kids. I am originally from Texas, and have been around guns all my life. My kids are young, and I have started them off simple by plinking soda cans with a bb gun I got as a little kid. The gun is inaccurate as can be, but this is where I teach them gun safety and handling.

Have your wife shoot a shotgun. The kick may be too much, and if she is afraid of the kick, she could be a little hesitant to use it in a panic situation. There are many options available. Keep doing research and go pick up and hold some guns at your gun store.
